“If you believe in a God who controls the big things, you have to believe in a God who controls the little things…”

A brief Excerpt: Christians believe God controls all things, providing comfort and assurance through providence.

A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – Christians believe that God is in charge of everything, from the big events in history to the little things that happen every day. The Bible shows us that God is deeply involved in our lives, ruling empires while at the same time aware of each of us to the smallest detail.

The Bible says that God makes kings and takes them away (Book of Daniel 2:21). He is in charge of the rise and fall of nations. History is not arbitrary, nor is it governed by blind fate. The crucifixion of Christ, the most important event in history, happened “according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23). His plans for redemption even included people’s rebellion.

But the Bible is also clear that God is in charge of what we might call the “little” things. Jesus said that not even a sparrow falls to the ground without the Father’s will and that the hairs on our heads are numbered (Matthew 10:29–30). These pictures are meant to be very personal.

In the Book of Proverbs, it says, “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord” (Proverbs 16:33). What seems random to humans is actually guided by God. This does not absolve human responsibility; rather, it confirms that nothing evades God’s sovereign authority.

This doctrine is not cold determinism for believers; it is solace. If God only controls the “big” things, then He may not care about the little things that worry us every day, like getting sick, losing a job, or having a strained relationship. But the Bible says that for those who love Him, He works “all things” together for good (Romans 8:28). When we say “all things,” we mean things that are annoying, take too long, let us down, or are small acts of kindness that we don’t even notice.

Biblical Christian theology refers to this all-encompassing rule as “providence.” God maintains creation, guides events, and fulfills His intentions while remaining wise, just, and benevolent. The Lord who created the universe establishes the ascent of nations and also determines the trajectory of an individual believer’s journey. While, at the same time, He allows for the free will of man. The amalgam of these two, which appear to be competing theologies, is part of the mystery of God, to be revealed on the other side of the grave (1 Corinthians 13:12).

So, Christians believe that chance does not control life. The sovereign Lord rules both galaxies and grains of sand, and He does so with love, arranging everything for His glory and the good of His people.
