A brief Excerpt: Why don't electrons crash into the nucleus? Quantum mechanics reveals God's extraordinary design — a silent miracle sustaining every atom in the universe by His sovereign Word.

The Question That Stopped Me: Why Don’t Electrons Crash?

Have you ever wondered why electrons don’t fall into the nucleus of an atom? In high school, I learned that electrons have a negative charge and protons have a positive charge, so they attract each other. But then, why doesn’t the electron crash straight into the nucleus, causing it to collapse? Such a scenario clearly doesn’t happen; if it did, I wouldn’t be writing this, and you wouldn’t be reading it. I saw a YouTube video about this fantastic miracle of creation yesterday and couldn’t stop being amazed by the precision and order with which God set up the most basic units of matter. Without too much technicality, let’s dive into this silent testimony to the awesome, sustaining power of God, who “upholds all things by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3, BSB).

Quantum Mechanics and God’s Ordered Design in the Atom

In the early 20th century, it was believed that atoms orbited the nucleus like the planets orbit the sun. Thanks to Einstein, Planck, and Bohr, we now understand the wave-particle duality of quantum entities and quantum rules. Thanks to Schrödinger, we know about the Electron Cloud model, which defines probabilities of where electrons might be located around the nucleus. [1] Electrons occupy specific energy levels, which determine the atom’s chemical properties. These defined, stable energy levels prevent electrons from losing energy, so they don’t spiral into the atom’s nucleus.

Energy Levels, Electron Shells, and the Fingerprints of Intelligence

Each shell around the nucleus of an atom can hold only a specific number of electrons, and each orbital has an associated energy level. This is not random; it’s order, purpose, and design. It seems highly unlikely that random processes in the evolutionary model could have assigned these exact values to the energy levels. Smacks of intelligent design to me, what do you think?

Eric Hedin understood the miracle of the atom in his article Thank God for Quantum Mechanics (Evolution News, 2023) when he wrote, “Without quantum effects, there would be no atoms, no chemistry, and no life.” [2] It boggles the mind to realize that the very existence of matter depends on this delicate balance inside the atom.

God’s Power and Wisdom Revealed in the Subatomic World

Scripture affirms that the universe is upheld by the Word and Will of God. In the intricacies of the atom, we see that the same divine Word that spoke galaxies into being also sustains the subatomic world. The God who orders the vast heavens also orders the invisible realm of electrons and quarks. The stability of the atom is one more testimony that nothing escapes His sovereign design.

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. (Hebrews 11:3).

Job marveled at this truth long before modern science.

"By His power He churned up the sea; by His understanding He shattered Rahab. By His breath the skies became fair; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent" (Job 26:12–13).

Jeremiah also acknowledged this truth when he declared:

"Ah, Lord GOD! You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You" (Jeremiah 32:17).

Why Quantum Mysteries Should Lead Us to Humility and Awe

The complexity of quantum mechanics points us to the truth that when we encounter mysteries in nature, we should humbly realize that phenomena do have causes. Even when we don’t yet understand them, we know they were created by God. The quantized nature of the electron’s orbit is not merely a random quirk; it’s a profound reflection of divine rationality.

Every atom in your body and mine exists coram Deo (before the face of God). The electrons dancing around each nucleus are simply obeying the laws He ordained. I don’t know about you, but this knowledge fills me with awe and gratitude. The same God who holds galaxies in place also holds together the atoms that make up our bodies. The stability of the atom reminds us that Christ Himself sustains the universe.

"He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:17).

Every Atom Is a Testimony to the Creator’s Sustaining Power

The fact that electrons (thankfully) don’t spiral into the nuclei of atoms is a testimony of praise to the Creator. When we look deeply into the structure of matter, we find a world of astonishing precision and beauty. Every atom, the building block of all creation, is a masterpiece of divine engineering. God, in His infinite wisdom, has designed the laws of nature to preserve the stability of His creation. These laws are the fingerprints of His creation, declaring His power to subdue chaos and bring beauty and order to the universe.

Therefore, when we look upon the smallest particles of creation, let’s look at them with reverence. In the stability of the atom, we glimpse the majesty of the One who made all things and holds them together by His eternal Word.
