Theology on the Lighter Side – Why did Lazarus wake up grumpy? – Because he was dead tired!
Lazarus was the third person Jesus resurrected, if one accepts a traditional chronology of the Bible. The first was the widow’s son of Nain (Luke 7:11-17), the second was Jarius’ daughter (Luke 8:40-56), and the third was Lazarus (John 11:1-44).
The anger and sadness expressed by Mary and her sister Martha at the delay of Jesus to come to the rescue of their brother speaks to us today. God’s answer to our prayers comes from One who is outside of time (Hebrews 13:8), sees the hearts of man (Hebrews 4:12), and has a perfect view of what the greater good is (Hebrews 14:3).
