In the book of John, Jesus makes one of His seven “I Am” declarations …
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." - John 6:35
Bread (and water) are considered the basic food staples of human life. Phrases such as “breaking bread together” confirm its ubiquitous nature. In Exodus 16:4, the Bible calls it the “bread from Heaven” that fed the Israelites in the desert.
Jesus uses the illustration of bread to reinforce the point that mankind can eat food for one meal and be hungry a few hours later. However, the words of Jesus provide hope, faith, and sustenance for eternity, such that one will never be hungry … for truth, God’s grace, and forgiveness again.
Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal. - John 6:27
