Editor’s note – JM Troppello writes often about trusting God with the ordinary details of life, and this piece is a good example why. What started as a simple task – sorting old jewelry to sell – turned into an unexpected $500 blessing that covered a real need. We’re running her story not because every act of decluttering ends in a windfall, but because it’s a clear, concrete picture of a God who pays attention to the details we’d never think to pray about specifically.
I’ve been sharing a lot lately about trusting God, being thankful for His provision, and learning to appreciate the blessings He brings into our lives. Yesterday, something happened that reminded me again how faithful He has been to my husband and me.
We’ve been praying about some financial needs, and although we’re continuing to trust the Lord, we still have expenses we’re trying to plan for. One of those expenses is getting new eyeglasses for both of us in a few weeks, and we were a little short of what I had budgeted.
But yesterday, I received an unexpected blessing that truly amazed me. And it all started with some old jewelry I was sorting through at home.
Taking a Closer Look at What I Already Had
Last night, I went through some containers of jewelry I no longer wear. I’ve been sorting through different things around the house lately, deciding what I want to keep and what I might be able to sell. I had several pieces of jewelry, including a few rings, some silver items, and a little butterfly pin. Some of the silver pieces needed cleaning, and I was considering listing them on Vinted.
But then I had another thought.
Instead of listing everything on Vinted right away, I decided to take a closer look at the pieces to see whether any had markings indicating they were sterling silver or gold. I started checking for the 925 marking that identifies sterling silver and looking more carefully at the rings. I knew some of the pieces were silver, but I wasn’t entirely sure about a couple of the rings.
One ring looked like it might be gold-plated, and another appeared to be white gold. But I couldn’t clearly identify the markings, so I decided it would be worth having a jeweler examine them. I’ve visited a local jewelry store a few times, so I figured I’d stop by to see what they thought.
When I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed someone driving away. I don’t know why, but I immediately thought it might be the jeweler who usually works in the back office. I notice little things like that, and I remember thinking he was probably leaving just as I arrived.
Sure enough, when I went inside, the woman at the counter started helping me look through the jewelry. She took the pieces into the back to have them examined, but then returned and explained that the jeweler had just left to take a package to FedEx.
I had to laugh to myself because apparently my parking-lot observation had been correct!
She told me he should be back within about half an hour, possibly sooner. Since the store was about 15 minutes from home, I decided it made more sense to wait nearby than drive all the way home and come back. I walked around the shopping center for a little while, and before long, the store called to let me know the jeweler had returned and examined my pieces.
I told them I’d be right over. That’s when I got a very pleasant surprise.
Editor’s note – It’s worth noticing what actually happened here: she didn’t just wait for money to appear. She took a second look at what she already owned, asked a knowledgeable person to examine it, and let the process play out. Faith and diligence aren’t opposites – they usually work together.
An Unexpected $500 Blessing
Before going to the jewelry store, I honestly didn’t expect to get much money. I knew there were a few sterling silver pieces, but I assumed they wouldn’t be worth a significant amount. I thought perhaps I might receive somewhere between $50 and $100 for everything. That would have been nice, and I certainly would have been thankful for it.
But when I returned to the store, I learned something I hadn’t expected. The ring I thought might be gold-plated was actually 18-karat gold. And the other ring I wasn’t sure about turned out to be 14-karat gold. Those discoveries made a tremendous difference in the jewelry’s value. When they added everything up, the store offered me $500 for the pieces.
I was shocked!
I walked into the store expecting a relatively small amount, but I left with $500. And the timing couldn’t have been better. My husband and I had been planning to buy new eyeglasses, and I was already trying to figure out how to cover the shortfall.
Now I had $500 that I could put toward that expense.
As I drove home, I had worship music playing, and I kept thinking about what had just happened. I was so thankful and amazed that something as simple as looking through jewelry I no longer wore had turned into such a significant financial blessing.
I couldn’t help but praise God.
Of course, I decided to examine the jewelry, take it to the store, and find out what it was worth. But I also believe God cares about our needs, and I saw this unexpected money as another reminder of His faithful provision. Sometimes we become so focused on what we still need that we overlook the resources we already have. And sometimes taking a closer look at what’s right in front of us can lead to an unexpected opportunity.
I certainly wasn’t expecting to find $500 sitting in my jewelry containers. But I’m incredibly thankful that I decided to look again.
Editor’s note – The contrast between what she expected ($50 to $100) and what she received ($500) is the detail that makes this story land. Scripture never promises that generosity or diligence guarantees a financial return, but it does describe a God who notices needs before we’ve finished naming them.
Remembering God’s Faithfulness Through Giving
As I reflected on this experience, I also thought about something that’s been an important part of our marriage. My husband and I believe we should give tithes to our church from the money we earn. When we can give more, we also enjoy supporting missions and other opportunities to help people.
Now, I know Christians sometimes disagree about tithing. Some believe Christians are still obligated to give a specific percentage of their income, while others believe giving under the New Covenant should be voluntary rather than based on a required percentage.
I’m not going to try to settle that discussion in this article. I simply want to share what my husband and I have experienced in our own lives. Throughout most of our marriage, we’ve made tithing a priority. Occasionally, we weren’t as consistent, but giving to the Lord’s work has remained important to us.
Looking back over the years, I remember so many times when God provided for us in ways I never could have anticipated. Sometimes it was an unexpected financial blessing. Other times it was an opportunity that came along at just the right moment, a need that was met, or a situation that worked out differently than we expected.
I don’t believe we can give money to God and then demand that He return a certain amount to us. That’s not why I want to give.
I want to give because I love the Lord, because everything I have ultimately comes from Him, and because I want to support the work of sharing the gospel and helping others. But I also believe it’s important to remember what Scripture teaches about generosity and God’s provision.
Malachi 3:10 says:
"Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it." (Malachi 3:10)
This passage was originally addressed to the people of Israel, concerning their covenant responsibilities and support for God’s house.
I recognize that Christians understand how that command applies today differently. But the passage has always reminded me to honor God with what He’s entrusted to us and to recognize that He is our provider.
Another verse that comes to mind is Luke 6:38, where Jesus says:
"Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you." (Luke 6:38)
In the surrounding passage, Jesus teaches about mercy, forgiveness, generosity, and how we treat others.
I think that’s important because giving isn’t simply about money. It’s about having a generous heart. It’s about extending kindness, showing mercy, helping people in need, and being willing to share what God has given us. And while I don’t believe every act of generosity guarantees a financial reward, I do believe God sees our hearts and cares about how we use what He’s entrusted to us.
For my husband and me, giving has been one way we’ve chosen to express our faith and gratitude to the Lord. And I’m thankful for the many ways He’s continued to provide for us throughout our marriage.
Editor’s note – Christians genuinely differ on how tithing applies under the New Covenant, and JM Troppello is right not to settle that debate here. What matters more than the percentage is the posture behind it: a heart that gives because it trusts a God who already owns everything.
Trusting God With the Next Step
As I think about yesterday’s experience, I’m reminded again that I don’t have to know exactly how God will meet every financial need.
I still need to be responsible. I need to budget carefully, continue working, make wise decisions, and use the resources God has given us. But I also need to remember that I don’t have to carry every concern on my own.
I’ve been learning so much lately about trusting God one step at a time. Sometimes that’s easier said than done, especially when expenses are coming up, or we’re praying about situations that haven’t been resolved yet.
Sometimes I look at everything we need to accomplish and wonder how it’s all going to work out. But then something like yesterday happens, and I’m reminded of the many times God has been faithful. I think about the prayers He’s answered over the years. I remember the unexpected opportunities He’s brought into our lives. And I consider how many times we’ve faced something that seemed difficult, only to look back later and recognize how God helped us through it.
That doesn’t mean every financial concern will disappear overnight or that every prayer will be answered in exactly the way I hope. But it does remind me that I can trust His wisdom, His timing, and His care for us.
Yesterday, I thought I was just going through some old jewelry and deciding what to sell. I certainly wasn’t expecting to discover two gold rings worth far more than I realized. I also didn’t expect to come home with $500 that could help cover an upcoming expense.
But I’m thankful that I took the time to look more closely, and I’m thankful for the blessing that came from it. I also think there’s a lesson here about appreciating what we already have. Sometimes we’re so busy looking for something new that we forget to consider the opportunities and resources already available to us.
That might be an item we no longer use, a skill we’ve developed, or an opportunity we’ve overlooked. We never know what might come from taking the next small step.
As I continue working on my business and trusting God with our family’s financial needs, I want to maintain a heart of gratitude. I don’t want to focus so much on what hasn’t happened yet that I overlook the blessings right in front of me. I also want to keep remembering that God has been faithful through so many seasons of my life.
The unexpected $500 was a wonderful blessing, and I’m incredibly thankful for it. But more than the money, I’m thankful for the reminder that I can keep bringing my needs to the Lord, make wise decisions, and trust Him with what comes next.
Have you ever experienced an unexpected blessing or provision at just the right time? How has God reminded you of His faithfulness when you faced a financial need or a difficult situation?
A Word from the Editor
Stories like this one aren’t really about jewelry or eyeglasses – they’re about a God who keeps His promises in ways we don’t always notice until we look back. Scripture promises, “My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). That doesn’t mean every need gets met on our timeline or in the form we expect, but it does mean we can keep bringing our needs to Him, do the practical work in front of us, and trust Him with what He does next.
