Be Driven to Ensure All is Well Between You and the Lord

Be sure that you are working on your relationship with Jesus and not your insurance policy for a good day.

With a Subtitle: Be sure that you are working on your relationship with Jesus and not your insurance policy for a good day.

A brief Excerpt: Genesis 32:26 is the focus verse, emphasizing seeking God’s blessing during daily quiet time. The message encourages prioritizing a relationship with Jesus over tasks.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Genesis 32:26, “And He said, ‘Let Me go, for the day breaks.’ But he said, ‘I will not let You go unless You bless me!'”

Background

What is your mindset as you prepare to spend time with God each day? When we sit down to watch a football game, we have a clear set of expectations, especially if our team is playing. We want minimal distractions, continuous snacks, and a victorious outcome. The same goes for when we get a day off from work. There will be certain projects that you have been planning on doing for some time, whether work around the house or something fun with the family. But no matter what, the game plan is to enjoy the day off and get as much done as possible. So when we get our Bible and sit down with Jesus, what are we expecting to happen? Is there anything in particular that you think God can do while you are reading and praying? I know that sounds like a silly question, but I’ve been there. I’ve had the early morning sessions where I’m not wrestling with God, I’m just wrestling to stay awake. There have been periods of time when I was going through the motions, getting as little from God as I was giving Him. And I’ve had those times, too, when I go in all excited with a new strategy, only to see it fizzle out before too long. Last night, I had a dream that I had unintentionally embarrassed and upset someone dear to me. But somehow, I was very insistent on apologizing and making sure that this person knew I was sorry and had meant no harm.

Application

That feeling from the dream still feels very real even now. And that relationship part of the dream, the part that drove me to be sure that all was right and made well, is what should drive our time with our Savior. Morning quiet times mean nothing between two strangers. Thinking that extra thirty minutes of sleep can do more for you than time before God will prove to be true if you let it. The relationship, even if it’s been strained and distant recently, must be what beckons us. Come and be with God to know Him and to be known by Him. And hold onto Him once you’re there with Him. He will bless you.

Charge

As we seek Him today, be sure that you are working on your relationship with Jesus and not your insurance policy for a good day. Spend enough time with Him and consider that blessing enough.
