“Sanctification is ultimately about saturating oneself with God’s Word and prayer.”

Where should our focus be in a growing relationship with the Lord?

With a Subtitle: Where should our focus be in a growing relationship with the Lord?

A brief Excerpt: Years of attendance, service projects, and discipleship classes are good, but none of them alone deepen a soul the way Scripture and prayer do. Sanctification grows where relationship with God is fed most directly.

A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – The difference between those who drink spiritual milk vs solid food is not the number of years since they professed Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. It’s not about the number of visits to church on Sunday, or even the number of discipleship classes they attended. It is certainly not measured by the amount of time spent in Christian service (Meals-on-Wheels, Finance Committee work, etc.).

All these things are good and valued by our Father in Heaven. But, what is critical for sanctification is the strengthening of our relationship with Him in prayer and the study of God’s Word. When we reject that element of the Christian life, we are holding back on so much of our growth potential. Good “works” are good and demonstrate an outward sign of our faith (James 2:14-26). However, He desires for us to substitute “good” with a closer approximation to “best.” And that often comes with a rebalancing of our service and a commensurate refocus on strengthening our relationship with Him.
