Theology on the Lighter Side – How do you make holy water? – You boil the devil out of it!
Scripture does not address the subject of “Holy Water.” Verses like Mathew 3:11 refer to using water for baptizing but it represents an illustration of being washed clean of our sins through PRIOR acceptance of Jesus Christ as one’s personal Lord and Savior.
Of course, in the Old Testament there are references to water being used to clean or purify items to be used in rituals. This is likely a foreshadowing of human baptisms of today.
The concept of “holy water” being anything more than symbolic began with Catholicism. “According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the earliest modern uses of holy water appear in the ninth century.” This is just another tradition that has taken on a life of its own, outside of Scripture. However… it would certainly be nice if a quick cleaning using some supernatural water could remove both the “devil” and our own sin nature from our bodies. Of course, there is a method to accomplish that goal for past, present, and future sins. It comes from being washed clean by the blood of Christ.
1 John 1:7 – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
