Editor’s note – This piece starts small: an envelope, a check, an amount that matched an unexpected bill down to the dollar. We’re running it because that kind of quiet timing is exactly where many believers first learn to recognize God’s hand – not in the dramatic, but in the ordinary mail. The author traces her reasoning from surprise to Isaiah 55, landing on a question worth asking honestly: what has God already done that we’ve forgotten to count?
An Unexpected Provision
I ran errands today, and when I got home, I checked the mail like I normally do.
A check was waiting for us.
It was money we were supposed to receive back from something several months ago. There had been a delay, and at one point we had tried to find out what was happening with it. Eventually, though, enough time passed that it wasn’t even on my radar anymore. I certainly wasn’t expecting it to arrive today. But here’s the part that blew my mind.
An unexpected expense came up today, and the check that arrived was the exact amount we needed for that expense.
I just stood there thinking, What? How did this even happen?
And then I thought, God did it again.
The Provision was Already on its Way
What amazes me is that I didn’t wake up this morning knowing that check was coming. I didn’t know we’d receive it the same day this particular expense came up.
But God knew.
Something set in motion months ago arrived at exactly the right time. I know some people could look at something like this and call it a coincidence. I understand that.
But when I look at my own life and see moments like this happening alongside everything else God has been teaching me about surrender, trust, and alignment, I can’t help but see His hand in it.
It reminded me again that God’s perspective is completely different from mine.
Isaiah 55:8-9 says:
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." [Isaiah 55:8-9]
Have you ever really stopped and thought about that?
We see what’s happening today. God sees what happened months ago, what’s happening right now, and what’s still ahead of us.
We can be worrying about how something is going to work out while God is already working through circumstances we don’t even know about yet.
Editor’s note – Isaiah 55:8-9 is usually quoted to describe mystery, but here it explains something practical: provision can already be in motion before we even start praying about the need.
I’m Seeing God Work in More Than One Area
This isn’t only about an unexpected check.
Over the last week or so, I’ve also been seeing God work in some family relationships. I’ve been watching healing take place and seeing situations begin to change in ways that have made me incredibly thankful.
Not everything in life is suddenly perfect. That’s not what I’m saying.
I’m still praying about some things. I still have questions I don’t have answers to. There are still areas where I have to wake up and intentionally choose to trust God, even when I don’t know what He’s going to do.
But I’m learning that surrender changes the way I experience the waiting. When I try to control everything, I feel the pressure of believing I have to figure it all out. When I surrender it to God, I can say, Lord, I don’t know how You’re going to work this out, but I trust that You know.
There’s peace in that.
Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
God’s provision doesn’t always arrive in the form or on the timeline we imagine. Today, ours arrived in an envelope in the mailbox.
Editor’s note – Notice she doesn’t claim everything is resolved. The peace she describes comes from surrender, not from having every answer, and that distinction matters for anyone still waiting.
Remember What He’s Already Done
If you’re reading this today and you’re feeling lost, worried, or disconnected, I want to encourage you to stop for a moment. Think about three things God has already done in your life.
- Maybe He provided financially when you didn’t know how something was going to work out.
- Maybe He restored a relationship.
- Maybe He gave you peace during a situation that should have overwhelmed you.
- Maybe He opened a door you weren’t expecting.
- Maybe He carried you through something you once thought you couldn’t handle.
Remember it.
I’ve been learning how important it is to intentionally remember God’s faithfulness because every new problem can make us forget the last answer to prayer. Today’s unexpected provision is something I don’t want to forget.
The next time I face an unexpected expense or a situation I don’t know how to solve, I want to remember the day a check showed up for the exact amount we needed.
Not because I believe God will always answer every financial need by putting a check in my mailbox. But because I know He is faithful. I know His timing is better than mine. And I know He can work through circumstances I can’t see.
That’s the kind of trust I want to continue developing.
God isn’t asking me to figure out this life alone. He wants to be involved in every part of it. I want to stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit, let Him bring my life into greater alignment with God, and trust Him when I can’t see what’s happening behind the scenes.
Today, I could see it. Tomorrow, I may not. But the God I’m trusting is the same either way. And maybe that’s what I needed to be reminded of most today.
Has God ever answered one of your prayers or provided something you needed in a completely unexpected way? What happened?
A Word from the Editor
Scripture doesn’t promise God’s timing will match ours, only that His ways run higher than ours, as Isaiah reminds us. The check in the mailbox is the small mercy; the pattern behind it is the point. Whatever you’re waiting on, the same God at work months ago is at work now.

Editor Comment: You point to Isaiah 55 to explain why an unexpected check felt so startling, and that is the right instinct: God's ways run ahead of ours long before we notice His hand moving.
