Scripture
Our verse for today comes from 2 Kings 2:21, “Then he went out to the source of the water, and cast in the salt there, and said, ‘Thus says the Lord, “I have healed this water; from it there shall be no more death or barrenness.”‘”
Background
I’m not much of an art guy. I can appreciate the talent and giftedness manifested through an amazing painting or sculpture, but it doesn’t stick with me very long. I enjoy the renowned classics created by the giants of the past several centuries, but even so, I’m not drawn to go and view them to soak up the essence of their expression. I’m more of a music guy. I love the music that I love. But even then, my tastes seem to be more limited than perhaps they should be for one who loves and plays and is moved by those seven notes of the musical scale. But whether it be music or art, there is much of each that is downright disturbing. We all could probably name at least one singer whose music presents a troubling message of darkness or hate. And who hasn’t seen examples of so-called “art” that leave you wondering about the person who imagined and created the piece? For these “artists,” a skill and a gift is evident, at least to some, but something seems to be seriously wrong at the source of the inspiration. Changing a few lyrics or modifying a particular color scheme won’t effectively alter the ideas and attitudes that drive the author or creator. Something must be fixed at the source. Just like the waters at Jericho.
Application
They were plentiful and flowed through the town. They brought moisture and cleansing. But they weren’t all they were supposed to be. There was no life in them. They were the exact opposite of the rivers of living water that Jesus promised. And so are many of the activities and efforts that you are producing each day. They couldn’t be further from the abundant life and supernatural peace that Jesus gives. There are results and time well spent. But the source is not the throne of Jesus. The power is not coming through the Holy Spirit. And so there is barrenness and death rather than life and contentment. Begin with the salt of Jesus rather than trying to add Him in later to bless your results. If you will, your exhaustion and exasperation will be changed into enthusiasm and exhilaration.
Charge
As we seek Him today, go to the source as you begin your efforts. Surrender your self to become the self He has made you for.
