A brief Excerpt: David, after defeating the Philistines, desires to build a temple for the ark of the covenant. However, God reveals to Nathan that David is not the one to build the temple, as God has a different plan.
Scripture
Our verse for today comes from 1 Chronicles 17:5, “For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought up Israel, even to this day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.”
Background
David had just brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and had a marvelous time of thanksgiving and praise, having just defeated the Philistines on two separate occasions. In the first battle, David asked God if he was to go up and attack them, and God told him to do so, and Israel was victorious. In the next battle, David inquired of God, and God told him this time not to go and attack but to circle around the Philistines and deliver a surprise attack to claim the victory God had prepared. Afterwards, during some time back at home, David looks around and realizes the luxury that is his house and feels bad that the ark of the covenant of the Lord is left out under the tents of the tabernacle. When he explains this to the prophet Nathan, he encourages David to do what he sees fit to rectify the problem he perceives in his heart. But that night, something was added to the formula that had been missing until now – the Word of the Lord. Twice before in the not-so-distant past, David had sought God’s will in times of battle, and God had spoken His instruction to him. But now, as David considered what the Lord might need from him, he decided to honor Him with a building worthy of the ark. But God decides to fix this before it gets out of hand. He has a plan for His ark and His temple, and David is not part of that plan.
Application
The moment David started getting comfortable in his home and coming up with ideas on his own, he started straying from what God wanted him to do. Even Nathan left out God this time. He figured it was David, so surely whatever he was planning must be ok with God. But God’s Word doesn’t prepare us just to then see how we make it on our own. His living scriptures sustain us daily like the food we constantly consume. When you remember Him in the struggles, don’t forget Him around the house. Seek His will in His Word in everything, and believe that those are the plans intended for you.
Charge
As we seek Him today, ask God about something specific that is on your heart. Believe that He wants you to do His will, and that He’ll show that to you.
