Say you meet someone who tells you, with total confidence, that there is no God anywhere, at any time, in any corner of the universe. Ask yourself what it would take to actually know that. You’d need to search every galaxy, every possible dimension of reality, every moment past and future – and come back certain. No human being has that vantage point. So when atheism speaks in absolutes, it isn’t reporting a discovery. It’s making a leap, and an enormous one.
Faith Wearing a Different Coat
Here’s the part people miss: unbelief isn’t neutral ground. It’s a position held by faith, just faith aimed somewhere other than God. The atheist trusts that unguided processes explain the fine-tuning of the cosmos, that consciousness rises out of chemistry with nothing behind it, that morality means something even though nothing designed us to care. None of that is proven. It’s believed. Calling it “science” instead of “faith” doesn’t change what’s happening underneath – a mind reaching past the evidence it has toward a conclusion it wants to be true.
What Scripture Already Said About This
The Bible never treats atheism as an intellectual discovery. It calls it something closer to a posture of the heart. “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God'” (Psalm 14:1). That’s not primarily an insult about intelligence – it’s a diagnosis about the will. Paul says it even more directly in Romans:
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. [Romans 1:20]
The denial isn’t a lack of evidence. Scripture says it’s a refusal of it.
Certainty That Doesn’t Require a Leap
Christian faith doesn’t ask you to ignore evidence and jump anyway. It asks you to trust a Person who has shown Himself through creation, through history, through a resurrected Son, and through the quiet witness of your own conscience. That’s a very different kind of trust than betting the entire universe holds no Creator when you’ve personally examined approximately none of it. One faith rests on revelation given. The other rests on a guess dressed up as certainty.
An Honest Place to Land
You don’t have to pretend you’ve got it all figured out to follow Jesus. You just have to admit you’re not the one who gets to decide, from the outside, what does or doesn’t exist beyond your own limited sight. Scripture offers something more solid than either blind certainty or resigned agnosticism: “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8). That’s not a leap into the dark. It’s an invitation to open your eyes and actually look.
