Quote Source – Jeff Hilles
A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – Recently the former CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, called for AI systems to be “unplugged” when they reach the point of “self-improvement.”
Now, as the US competes with China for AI dominance, who is going to unplug it when it goes beyond “AI Agents” (details here) to a system that, in the words of Schmidt, becomes “AI Scientists.” At this point Artificial Intelligent systems integrate, communicate, experiment, and develop independently,
When asked if AI Scientists might be resistant to being unplugged, Schmidt responded, “Well, in theory, we better have somebody with the hand on the plug – and metaphorically.”
AI Morality
The basis for AI development is the value it will bring to humanity. Faster drug trials, better weather predictions, improved military strategy, preventing the spread of diseases, factory automation, etc. The list of benefits goes on and on. However, as we rush forward, neck and neck with China, what about the hidden costs?
Schmidt concluded his assessment of the future of AI by attempting to justify its value under the supposition that humanity will be able to control it. He stated, “As long as human values – and by that I mean democratic liberal values in the classic sense of individual freedom and respect for an individual are preserved – we should be okay.”
Consider that assumption from one who very likely does not know Jesus and is not willing to recognize or acknowledge the overarching sin nature of man.
Christian Response to Artificial Intelligence
Biblical Christians are in this world but not of this world. Artificial Intelligence is not just another technological advancement like the automobile, the internet, the cell phone, etc. AI will be the first man-made product that will not only vastly exceed human intelligence, but will operate independently of human control.
Within a few decades, Artificial Intelligence will have the capability to usurp God’s creation and there will be no plug to unplug as the former CEO of Google predicts. Further, the “human values.. of freedom and respect for an individual” will be left in the hands of a machine.
Given that Jesus is returning for His people, Christians should rest in the knowledge that the full impact of AI will take place when we are no longer around.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 – For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
As born-again believers, our destiny will not be in the hands of AI. We are in the hands of the Creator of the universe.
