With a Subtitle: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego show the fearless trust God calls His people to have
A brief Excerpt: Daniel 3 reveals a powerful picture of childlike faith as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow to Nebuchadnezzar’s idol, trusting God whether He delivered them or not.
Faith Like a Child in the Face of Fire
As kids, they had faith.
To fully understand this powerful story, please read all of Daniel 3. This is about how childlike faith truly works when the heart is tuned toward God.
Nebuchadnezzar’s Idol and the Order to Bow
King Nebuchadnezzar built a giant statue and told everyone in his kingdom to bow down to it. The king called the three young Hebrew men to him when they said no.
Daniel 3:14-18 - Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, “Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up? Now if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good. But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?” Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
A Brave Response to Death
The three Hebrew men had to choose between bowing down to the king’s idol and being thrown into the fiery furnace, where they would die in pain. They had the strong, unshakeable faith, something that children often have: as long as they stayed close to the Father, everything would be fine. The threat of death, which was very real, would not stop them. They knew God could save them from the fire, but they also knew it was up to Him, and that they wouldn’t bow down to Nebuchadnezzar, even if it meant death. Jesus wants us to have this kind of faith when He said we should become like little children. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego showed that it is possible even before Jesus made this statement.
Matthew 18:3 - and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."
Faith That Trusts God Without Conditions
God Can do what He wishes, but We Will Not Give In
Their answer was powerful because they didn’t know what would happen next. They didn’t say, “If God saves us, we will obey.” They would do what He said even if He didn’t release them from certain death. That’s what faith is. When we can already see the way out, it’s easy to trust God. But these men stayed strong even though all they could see was the fire. They didn’t trust in comfort, safety, or results on Earth. They trusted in God’s character.
This is an area in our Christian walk where a lot of us have trouble. We want faith that makes sense. We want people to obey the rules and see the benefits. We want to know that everything will work out for us right away if we stand up for the Lord. But faith like a child’s doesn’t try to make deals with God. It demonstrates faith regardless of the outcome. Childlike faith listens to Him because He is good, not because the way is easy (Luke 9:23).
What Childlike Faith Looks Like for Believers Today
Today we can still learn from Daniel, chapter 3. We may not be in a real furnace, but we do feel pressure to bow. The world constantly tries to persuade believers to give in, keep quiet, soften the truth, or put acceptance ahead of obedience. We are called to stand, just like these three Hebrew men. Having faith like a child is not the same as being weak. No matter what, it is simple and steady … faith in God.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego show us that faith isn’t about how loud we speak but how strong we stand. They had complete faith in their Father, and that’s how Jesus wants us to have faith in Him as well.
