Recently there was a conference held on the campus of Colorado Christian University entitled “AI for Humanity: Morality for a Flourishing Future.” The university, The Christian Post, and Gloo, an organization in the field of Christian AI, co-sponsored it. One of the speakers was Dr. Michael Arena, Dean of the Crowell School of Business, Biola University, who offered three graphs on the trajectory of artificial intelligence.

Observe the growth curve that starts in 2010 and accelerates at a rate faster than Moore’s Law, which historically describes the pattern of doubling the number of transistors that can be embedded on a single microchip every two years. This has been the basis for technological advancement until the advent of AI.

Note the projected acceleration in Generative AI over the next decade. Generative AI is a broad form of artificial intelligence that learns independently and, based on its research, creates models of behavior and predictive abilities that are applicable in medicine, weather management, and military applications, to name a few. Also, note the smaller line of increasing financial allocations as the more narrow models give way to this more sophisticated form of AI.

Finally, this complicated graph is extremely informative if one invests the time in review. With the horizontal axis being time from 2012 to 2024, each line represents a different type of artificial intelligence application. On the top far left of the graph, “Image Classification” is noted as the first use of AI, followed by “Visual Learning,” and so on. Now notice the 100% dotted line across the top of the graph. That represents a “Human Baseline.” As one can see, each of the intended uses of AI follows a trajectory that approaches the human baseline, and nearly all exceed it as of 2024. Only “Multimodal Understanding and Reasoning” remains below human capabilities. This function refers to the understanding and reasoning of models to process and interpret information from multiple types of data inputs, such as text, images, videos, etc. and to apply artificial reasoning skills to generate opinions and predictive results.
What will these lines look like in 2025 and beyond? What new capabilities (line types) will be added, and how will all this fit into our culture and our level of dependency on AI? How soon will Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) be a new line on the chart … a type of AI referred to as “human-level intelligence” that would match and then exceed human capabilities across all cognitive tasks?
Finally, what will God do when man has created a general intelligence that is more capable than His creation?
