Theology on the Lighter Side – Why are Christians always calm about eternity? – Because they have everlasting peace!
I honestly don’t understand why this was considered a joke on the site I have been pulling these “Lighter Side” puns from. This is, or should be, one of the fundamental principles of a Biblical Christian worldview.
Philippians 4:7 – And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The times we don’t have that peace is when our sin nature takes control.
Somewhat early in my Christian walk, my wife and I were flying across country. The plane experienced a number of dead air spaces when it simply dropped, with no warning. When we got off the plane, a stewardess of 35 years told me she had never experienced as bad a drop as we had had. Over that 15 minutes of dead air, my wife and I looked at each other, held each other’s hand, and tried to experience “the peace of God which surpasses all understanding.” I confess it was a lesson in recognizing that I can play the game of Christian smugness on where I am headed but, when it comes down to a plane crash, my sin-based fear of death took over.
We (I) do live daily in the arms of Jesus even though, at any point, the sin of fear can creep its way in.
