A brief Excerpt: Biden’s conciliatory invitation marks Trump’s first return to the White House since 2021

After losing the 2020 election, then-President Donald Trump broke two longstanding traditions that demonstrate American democracy’s commitment to a peaceful transfer of power. First, he chose not to invite President-elect Joe Biden to the White House, continuing to assert he had not lost the election. Later, he decided to skip Biden’s inauguration, leaving Washington only hours before the ceremony began.

But now, these customs are set to return. President Biden has extended an invitation to Trump, marking Trump’s first time back to the White House since his departure in 2021. Biden’s invitation can be seen as a conciliatory gesture, aiming to reinforce democratic traditions and foster a spirit of unity. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre explained that Biden believes in upholding the norms of a peaceful transfer, stating, “The American people deserve this… a peaceful transfer of power… a smooth transition.”

A week before Trump left office in 2021, the House impeached him for a second time, charging him with “incitement of insurrection” following the storming of the U.S. Capitol by his supporters on January 6.

As Trump resumes these traditions, we’re reminded of respecting authority and participating in orderly transitions, even amid deep divisions. The Bible calls us to respect governing authorities, recognizing that their authority ultimately falls under God’s sovereignty:

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. — Romans 13:1

The peaceful transfer of power reflects the order God values. Honoring these customs, especially after conflict, can be an act of humility and patience. Proverbs offers a fitting reminder here:

Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city. — Proverbs 16:32

Last week, Biden extended a congratulatory invitation to Trump. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden’s choice reflects his belief in “the norms,” adding that “the American people deserve this… a peaceful transfer of power… a smooth transition.” Even after a challenging history, Biden’s commitment to these traditions highlights the enduring strength of America’s democratic principles. This unity speaks to the nation’s resilience, reminding us what can be achieved when leaders honor their duty to the people.

As Christians, we are encouraged to pray for those in authority. We follow a Biblical call to foster unity by supporting efforts toward peace and reconciliation.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. — Philippians 4:6–7

In 2016, Trump received a White House invitation from then-President Barack Obama after his election. Obama hosted Trump for a 90-minute meeting, which he later described as “excellent.” That meeting showed the strength found in bridging divides and honoring democratic customs. Similarly, this meeting between Biden and Trump reflects an ongoing commitment to peaceful transitions.

This moment reminds us that reconciliation, even amid deep political divisions, reinforces the strength of our democracy. As followers of Christ, let us continue to pray for wisdom and unity among our leaders, trusting that God’s purpose will prevail in times of transition.

Heart of a Leader

The 2024 election, which brought Donald Trump back as president, highlights questions about tradition, stability, and integrity in leadership. Trump’s earlier decision to break with traditions of the peaceful transfer of power, followed by his return to those same customs, reflects a complex relationship with tradition.

President Biden’s decision to invite Trump to the White House reinforces the importance of democratic norms. While this backdrop raises questions about political stability, it also invites a deeper discussion on integrity and character in leadership — one we, as Christians, are called to approach with care and Biblical insight.

From a Christian perspective, integrity in leadership matters deeply. God emphasizes the importance of a leader’s inner character over their outward power or influence:

The Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. — 1 Samuel 16:7

This principle reminds us to consider a leader’s heart, not only their platform. While Trump’s conservative platform symbolized stability to many voters during rapid change, weighing character alongside policy is essential.

Reflecting on my own experience, I recall meeting former President George Bush nearly 25 years ago. Although I didn’t vote for him, I respected his integrity and his commitment to lead with character. I was so proud to shake his hand and stand for a quick photo. Scripture echoes this standard for leaders:

An overseer must be above reproach… not arrogant or quick-tempered… but a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. — Titus 1:7–8

These qualities provide a vision for leadership that transcends political ideologies. They remind us that respect often rests on a leader’s moral character, not merely on shared beliefs.

As we consider Trump’s re-election amid controversies, Proverbs offers insight into the importance of righteous leadership:

When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan. — Proverbs 29:2

While stability is desirable in uncertain times, we are called to prioritize integrity. As Christians, let us pray for wisdom to discern godly leadership, remembering that leaders are responsible not just to power but to a higher standard — reflecting God’s justice and love.

Unity in Diversity

The meeting between President-elect Trump and President Biden offered a rare opportunity for reconciliation and unity. In meeting with Trump, Biden demonstrated a commitment to reconciliation, extending a conciliatory gesture that underscores the importance of unity, even after conflict. After years marked by division, their willingness to meet demonstrates a commitment to honoring traditions that bridge personal differences.

Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount call us to this same spirit of peace:

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. — Matthew 5:9

This verse underscores the value God places on those who work to bring peace, even across divides. The meeting between Biden and Trump — leaders with different views — is a powerful reminder of the peacemaking we are called to as followers of Christ. It challenges us to approach others humbly, seeking common ground, even when perspectives differ.

Ephesians further reinforces the need for unity:

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. — Ephesians 4:3

Unity requires intentionality and commitment, especially in times of disagreement. Biden’s choice to uphold democratic customs, even after a contentious history, aligns with this Biblical call to reconciliation. Their meeting shows that unity can endure beyond political divides.

This commitment to reconciliation matters for leaders and all of us as we strive to reflect Christ’s love in a divided world. Paul’s words in Romans remind us to pursue peace actively:

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. — Romans 12:18

As Trump and Biden set aside past grievances for a peaceful transition, we are reminded of the strength that unity brings to our communities. May their example inspire us to seek reconciliation, fostering healing and strength in our relationships.

Lifting Leaders in Prayer

As Christians, we are called to pray for our leaders, regardless of personal views or political opinions. Paul instructs us on the importance of this practice:

I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. —  1 Timothy 2:1–2

In times of division, prayer remains essential. By praying for Trump and Biden to lead with wisdom and humility, we open our hearts to God’s greater purpose, inviting His guidance for those in positions of authority.

This moment calls us to step beyond political lines. Prayer acknowledges that God’s will transcends any single agenda and invites His influence to shape the hearts of those who lead. Let us pray that Trump and Biden are granted wisdom, humility, and a commitment to unity.

We can also ask God to instill in them a spirit of reconciliation, enabling them to lead with compassion. Our prayers serve as a foundation for the peace and cooperation we hope to see, reminding us that even in the face of division, we are united by a higher calling.

As Christians, may this moment renew our commitment to reconciliation and prayer. In seeking peace, we reflect God’s heart, trusting that our prayers bring healing and unity to a divided nation. Let us strive to be peacemakers, embodying Christ’s love and grace in a world that deeply needs both.
