Subtitle: Remind yourself that everything else that comes your way, that pulls you and calls you and clamors for your attention, is on His list, not yours.
Excerpt: The devotion emphasizes prioritizing God’s kingdom above all else, drawing a parallel between building a tree fort for a son and prioritizing God’s will. It encourages trusting God to manage the rest of life’s demands and finding joy in aligning priorities with His.
Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Luke 12:31, “But let your chief care be for His kingdom, and these other things will be given to you in addition.”
Background
If you’re a list-maker, then you know all about the value of prioritizing. But if you’re constantly behind, like you might be at work, then you know all too well the frustration of trying to decide which task should be the top priority. So much needs to get done that it’s almost impossible to choose which one is the most important. And our lives can get this way in any arena. At home, the clutter and the disorganization may go directly against your nature. But orderliness is often the first thing sacrificed when you’re trying to keep a family going. Just making it from breakfast to bedtime can take on a life all its own. But as the days go by, as we allot our free time on the weekends and our days off, the things that really matter get attended to. We might have in our minds something we’d like to accomplish, but when we’ve used up our twenty-four hours, or our seven days, or the summer months, we have shown ourselves, and all who may see, what our priorities really are.
Application
When I finally started building a tree fort for my son this weekend, with the wood we bought for it almost a year ago, I made a priority out of a nice idea. And the joy that overflowed from him, even from the minute I woke him and told him the schedule, reminds me of the joy that our Father must have when we finally get it right and make His kingdom our chief care. My son even told his friends that will occupy the fort and reign over the neighborhood with him that he knew I would build it. His hope never faded, even as I put him off week after week. Now, I finally got it right. But I wonder how many of us will get it right with our Father and His kingdom? How many of us are going to try to get everything else taken care of first before His kingdom makes it to the top of the list? But, there really isn’t a list. It’s an item. Seek Him. All the rest, He says, He’ll give to you. He’ll manage the list. That sounds hard to believe, especially with everyone seeming to be so busy and overwhelmed. But trust Him on this, and know the joy of prioritizing.
Charge
As we seek Him today, remind yourself that everything else that comes your way, that pulls you and calls you and clamors for your attention, is on His list, not yours. Let Him add it to you as only He can.
