When a Christian and God Differ…

On the subject of Homosexuality.

On the subject of Homosexuality.

When aspects of human morality seem to run counter to the Bible, Christians are faced with a dilemma. We can either reject God’s perfect truth, reject our interpretation of His command as found in Scripture, or acknowledge the Lord has a broader understanding as He is omniscient and we are not.

Recently, I was admonished for suggesting that homosexuality is a sin.

What position each of us take on this issue determines the level of Biblical Christian maturity we have.

Reject – There are many who reject the Bible outright since they believe some are born with a propensity for exhibiting a gay lifestyle. If God ‘made them that way,’ how should loving Christians (Luke 10:27b) stand in the way of their happiness? They logically conclude that the Bible was, therefore, written by flawed men, not by an unchanging, inerrant God.

Reinterpret – Others reinterpret the Bible in a way that allows for monogamous sexual relationships between same-sex partners. They reject clear passages on the subject and focus on those that suggest the “sin” was not from homosexuality, but from promiscuity.

Accept – Finally, there are Christians who accept God’s view and reject their own, acknowledging that He is in a better position to decide what is a sin and what is not a sin than we are. Of course, this latter group is vilified as homophobic.

Interestingly, the word homophobic is defined by Webster as, “discrimination against, aversion to, or fear of homosexuality or gay people.” And, perhaps some Christians do discriminate, have an aversion to and/or fear this segment of our society. Other Christians however, love people, something Christ has called us to as one of His highest commands (Mark 12:31). They (we) try to keep a low profile on homosexuality being a sin as it damages our testimony and desire to share the Good News of the gospel. But, when pressed to respond (1 Peter 3:15) to the hope we have in Christ being damaged by our sin nature, we need to respond with grace, but also with honesty that, of the thousands of sins mankind has the propensity to commit, homosexuality is unfortunately (in my view) on the list.

Leviticus 18:22, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Romans 1:26-27, Jude 1:7, 1 Timothy 1:10, Mark 10:6-9, 1 Corinthians 7:2, Matthew 19:4-6, etc.

All believers are on the road of sanctification, growing in Christ. The more we study His Word, pray, worship and draw close to God, the more we will recognize that His ways are above our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9), and reach an increasing level of comfort in turning over our opinions on how things should be to the Creator of the universe.

1 Corinthians 13:11 – When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.
