Theology on the Lighter Side – What’s Santa’s favorite type of music? – Wrap, what else!
Rap music, similar to jazz, is not something everyone appreciates. The variety of music in the world provides an illustration of the diversity of God’s creation, even within the same species… mankind. We all bear the image of God… not in a physical sense, but in our complexity, our inherited morality, our capacity for relationships, and potential holiness. And yet, each of is unique in so many ways. In something as common as index fingerprints, the chance of two people having the same is one in sixty-four billion, and having the same eye scan is less than one in ten billion. We all have our own opinions, personalities, and external appearances. Some of these differences come from our backgrounds (nurture), and some we inherit from our parents (nature).
However, there is a downside to this amazing diversity. It sets up a potential for conflicts between nations, cultures, and individuals when our sin nature surfaces. As we settle into Christmas, knowing that families are full of differing opinions, try to be gracious in the conversations you have on divisive topics. Keep the main thing the main thing, which is not Trump, Palestinians, immigration, abortion, Somalis, or any of the other hot-button issues of the day. We are all different, and only a few of us have the Holy Spirit in our hearts, which should be providing a soft and grace-filled response to conflicts. Focus on Jesus Christ, not the baby in the manger, but the Savior of your loved ones.
