Scripture
Our verse for today comes from John 10:28, “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.”
Background
I suffered a very strange injury one night. During a softball game, a ball that was hit bounced and struck my pinkie and pushed it away from my other fingers. In that instant, the skin between my pinkie and ring finger ripped open. Needless to say, between the pain and the blood and the open wound, my hand wasn’t much good for anything after that. Fortunately, the game was down to the final out, and I could head home and get fixed up. But with just that odd bounce and a quick tear of the flesh, I was immediately reduced to one useful hand and another that’s left to heal. But the hand of our Savior works in just the reverse. The nails that pierced His hands did not make them less able to hold on. Those nails that everyone thought were holding Him to that tree were only making it possible for Him to hold onto us for eternity. When He showed the wounds to His disciples in that upper room, they were not wounds that rendered Him helpless and in need of healing. They were simply the price He had paid to guarantee that no one would ever slip through His fingers. Nothing could ever take one person from out of His hold. That is the security He gave us on the cross.
Application
As a follower of Jesus, there could be nothing more peaceful than knowing that He has given us eternal life, and He holds it securely in His own hands. Just as we didn’t give ourselves life as a newborn, we have not climbed up from our sinful selves and placed our self in His hand. He has given us what we could not gain on our own. We have been given eternal life. And an eternal life cannot be lost, or else how could it be eternal? And since it is eternal, we know that it comes solely through Him and His grace, and it places us securely in His hands, the very hands that yielded their life to the punishment of sinners. So know for sure that His hands are able to keep those within His grasp. Not even death takes us from His hold. That is the hand that has reached down and chosen you, and it will never let you go.
Charge
As we seek Him today, ask God to fill your mind with the peace that knows it is secure. Look at your day as another gift spent safely in the hands of your Savior.
