We Are Saved Regardless of Our Background

Despite our shortcomings, God chooses and saves us, just as He did Rahab.

Despite our shortcomings, God chooses and saves us, just as He did Rahab.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Joshua 2:1, “Now Joshua the son of Nun sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy secretly, saying, ‘Go, view the land, especially Jericho.’ So they went, and came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and lodged there.”

Background

Joshua was embarking on his first act as new leader of the Israelites. As the people were approaching the Jordan, he sent two spies over to view the promised land, especially the closest city of Jericho, to bring back a report of what to expect. As they come to the end of their mission, the spies spend the night at the house of Rahab, who happened to be a harlot. Word gets out that they are there, and men are sent to seize them and bring them in to the local ruler. But Rahab hides them, lies to the guards, and then sends the spies safely away with a plan on how to avoid capture and return to their camp. As the men are leaving, she promises not to say a word about the impending attack, and begs them to spare her household when they return to destroy the city. The spies agree, as long as she keeps her word, and they set up a signal to make sure that Rahab and those within her home are not harmed during the battle. But having just seen Rahab lie about them to the guards, the spies are undoubtedly skeptical about Rahab keeping her vow. But she does, and her family is spared as God actually includes her in the Messianic line.

Application

Now, this story has always seemed kind of unusual to me, showing a slightly salty side to God and His providence. He protects the spies and gives victory to His people, but does it through the lies of the enemy who makes her living as a prostitute. I thought it would have been cool to have been a spy, but weird to have stayed at the harlot’s house. But then God told me something. He said that I was the harlot. I am not the faithful spy who boldly reports certain victory to Joshua. I am on the wrong side of the Jordan, lying and prostituting before Almighty God. Yet He still chooses me. Even though I fail to hold up my part in any bargain I make, He mercifully hears me when I beg for His grace. My promises don’t convince Him, and my lies don’t deter Him. And I, too, am even included in the Messianic line. Just as you are. It is an unusual story, and it’s a good thing it is. It includes you and me.

Charge

As we seek Him today, take a minute to realize all He has saved you from. Look in your heart and see just how humbly submitted you are to His will, whatever it may be and whoever’s home it may take you to.
