Trump Continues to Focus on a Works-Based Salvation

But Heaven is not based on our works.

Trump continues to return to the subject of eternal life beyond the grave, likely in large part due to multiple assassination attempts on his life during his second term in office. Below is a compilation of quotes he uttered today while en route to receive honors from the Israeli Knesset.

  • “I don’t think there’s anything [that’s] going to get me in Heaven.”
  • “I think I’m not Heaven-bound.”
  • “I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to make Heaven, but I’ve made life a lot better for a lot of people.”

Earlier quotes on the subject of Heaven and his efforts toward resolving the Russian-Ukraine war include:

  • “I want to try and get to Heaven.”
  • Trump said he was at the “bottom of the totem pole” for going to Heaven.
  • “If I can save seven thousand people a week from being killed … that’s pretty [good] … I want to try to get to Heaven if possible.”
  • “I’m hearing I’m not doing well,” as related to being Heaven-bound.
  • “But if I can get to Heaven, this will be one of the reasons.”

Conclusion

Donald Trump, like so many others with multiple religious theologies, believes that salvation and Heaven are the result of our efforts at being a good person. Like so many in power, the President knows his past has been mixed with both good and bad behavior. As he nears the end of his life, potentially shortened prematurely, he finds himself reflecting more and more on what awaits us all beyond death. His Christian views recognize the sharp dividing line between Heaven and Hell, but have not matured to the point of understanding that our works or good deeds do not determine our eternity with or without God.

As Biblical Christians, we are called to do good deeds, to love our neighbors, to care for the poor, and to support the downtrodden. Trump is in a position to stop wars and improve the lives of billions, yet he is still unsure if that is enough for God.

What the President and so many others miss is that God is looking for a relationship with His children (humanity), not slaves trying to earn His favor for a Heavenly reward.

Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

The Lord calls His children to recognize their (our) sin and ask Him for forgiveness, to turn away from it and turn toward Him, to accept the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross in full payment for our sins (no matter how grievous), and to accept Christ, not only as our Savior, but also as our Lord, following His commands as found in God’s love letter to mankind, the Bible.

Romans 10:9 - If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

POSTSCRIPT: Note that the President was quoted as saying he “maybe not Heaven-bound.” To many, that was “heartbreaking“; however, I would offer the acknowledgement as the first step in salvation. To admit that eternal life with God does not come from our good behavior over our bad behavior, but from an acknowledgement that our reliance is not on ourselves, but on the work of Christ. When a seeker admits their failings yet believes in a judgement beyond the grave, that can be the first step toward Jesus as one’s Lord and Savior.
