When a little child experiences something frightening or dangerous, the immediate reaction will be to run for Mom and be in her arms. The child knows that in Mom’s arms there is safety and comfort and everything will be alright. Where there was panic before, there is peace and calm in all the turmoil.
Jesus said that we must become as little children, or we will not be able to enter into the Kingdom of God (Matthew 18:3). Obviously, this is paraphrased. Does He mean that we would lose our salvation if we did not become as little children? Of course not! What Jesus is talking about is that we need to have the infinite trust in our Heavenly Father that little children have in their parents. We need to know that our Heavenly Father is always with us and that we can come to him at any time, especially if we are in troubling times. Only then will we have peace that surpasses all understanding.
How, then, can we become as little children, or is this even possible? As Nicodemus asked Jesus: how can an old man enter into his mother’s womb again (John 3:4)? Obviously, Nicodemus did not understand the spiritual, and, sadly for many, neither do we. Jesus is not asking us to reduce our size or to be silly as little children. No, Jesus is asking us to be as trusting in our Heavenly Father as little children are in their natural parents. Again, how can this be? Or is this even possible?
Jesus would never ask of us anything that we are unable to do! Therefore, there must be a way that we can become as trusting as little children. And the key to this must be found in the scripture. However, as it turns out, we usually study what the Lord requires of us in our daily lives, but we never concentrate our studies on what God is like. Little children don’t understand their parents, but they don’t have any negative experiences about their abilities either. Since they are trusting by nature, they put infinite trust in their parents and that trust only diminishes as experience teaches them that their parents are not all powerful. Their infinite trust is unrealistic. However, infinite trust in our Heavenly Father is realistic, and we need to convince our mind and our heart to understand everything about God that we are able to grasp. If we are simple minded, we need to understand little about God. However, if we are intellectual, we need to fill our mind with the knowledge of God so that our mind will support our heart, trusting God when times get tough.
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
