The Vicious Dogs at Our Heels

Have you ever posted a Christian article or commented on one and received a virulent reply from a militant Atheist who immediately attacks your point of view? I have, and it doesn’t bother me in the least. Why not, you may ask. Because I’m confident that the evidence I possess supports my point of view. I also have faith that God will provide all the answers I need to rebut harsh criticism. It seems that Atheists cling to their arguments for atheism with as much fervor (and faith) as I cling to my faith in the God of the Bible. Here is some of the evidence I’ve discovered that has contributed to a solid faith that lives not only in my head, but also in my heart.

Cause and Effect

God is an eternal being, and whatever is eternal transcends space and time. Can you imagine having a book without an author, a building without a builder, or a painting without an artist? Authors, builders, and artists are implied to exist because of the existence of their creations. God either exists or He doesn’t exist. There are good arguments in favor of God’s existence and Intelligent Design.

For example, the information in the DNA molecule implies a mind because it contains instructions to build different kinds of cells. Many physics constants are perfectly balanced (such as the gravitational constant, the strong and weak nuclear forces, the cosmological constant, etc.) within extremely narrow ranges that allow for the existence of intelligent life. If these values were even slightly different, life as we know it would be impossible.

And why do people long for justice? Morality is seen in people all over the world. They seem to have a conscience or an inherent sense of right and wrong. How could that sense come from blind chance? “How could such intelligence arise from non-intelligence?” (Does God Exist? Bobby Conway, page 13)

The same logic applies to the Universe. Since everyone can see the Universe exists, that fact implies the existence of a Universe Creator. According to Frank Turek in his excellent web article: Does God Exist? God appears to have the following attributes:

  • “Spaceless because it created space”
  • “Timeless because it created time”
  • “Immaterial because it created matter”
  • “Powerful because it created out of nothing”
  • “Intelligent because the creation event and the universe were precisely designed”
  • “Personal because it chose to convert a state of nothing into something (impersonal forces don’t make choices)”

The classical 4 arguments for the existence of God

  • Ontological argument — An ontological argument is an argument that states that God must exist because a God who exists must be greater than one who does not. [1]
  • The Kalam Cosmological argument — William Lane Craig states the argument as: [2]…“Everything that begins to exist has a cause …. The universe began to exist… Therefore, the universe has a cause.”
  • The Teleological argument is the argument for Intelligent Design, and it proposes that the Universe appears to have a purpose and to be specifically designed to fulfill that purpose. [3]
  • The Moral argument — states: “A human experience of morality is observed … God is the best or only explanation for this moral experience … Therefore, God exists.” [4]

Is the Universe Eternal?

Is God the uncaused Creator of the universe, or is the universe uncaused and eternal? Has the universe always existed? Before the 20th century, there wasn’t any way to prove which theory was correct. Einstein’s equations for the general theory of relativity showed humanity that the universe was either expanding or contracting. That is why he proposed the “cosmological constant” theory to support the idea of an eternal universe. However, when Edwin Hubble discovered the “redshift” concept, which proved the universe was expanding, the “cosmological constant” idea was abandoned. [5]

One of the most reasonable explanations (in my opinion) as to why the universe could not be eternal is the second law of thermodynamics. That is the law of increasing entropy, which states that everything is running down and out of energy. Since it has been proven that the universe is expanding, then logically, the universe must have had a beginning (the Big Bang) when all the available energy and matter were compressed into a singularity. Someday, all that matter and energy will get used up, and that will be the end of the universe.

So, the next time you’re attacked and hounded by a militant atheist trying to rip apart your faith, rest assured, there is plenty of evidence that exists to rebut their position. I recommend reading books by the following authors to help you in that endeavor: Dr. Frank Turek, Greg Koukl, Dr. Titus Kennedy, Professor John Lennox, Dr. Stephen C. Meyer, Dr. James Tour, Josh McDowell, and Lee Strobel.
