Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Luke 5:9, ” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken. ”
Background
I had an early appointment yesterday with the dentist. Unfortunately, during the previous night, the power had gone out in our home and my alarm clock failed to wake me up when it was supposed to. So when I finally did awaken, it was already the time that I had planned on leaving the house. That’s a yucky feeling. Nevertheless, I got ready as quickly as possible, hurried out the door, trying not to forget anything that I needed, and began the anxious drive to get my teeth cleaned. While I navigated traffic, it immediately became clear that all of the buffer time I had built into my schedule was exhausted by my oversleeping, and arriving on time was going to be a significant challenge. And so I was tempted to make up the difference by speeding along as fast as possible. But then I imagined this conversation that God might have with me. I heard Him encourage me to go as fast as I could. He said He would do what He could to help me get there on time, but frankly, managing all of that traffic and sequencing that many traffic lights was more than He could handle. He would give it the old college try, I would drive like a bat from you know where, and we’d hope for the best.
Application
Even before I reached the end of my imaginary conversation, I was laughing at Satan for how simple and elementary his tactics can be. Yet I was struck by how often they work. I didn’t speed across town to avoid being late (I made it with five minutes to spare), at least not this time. But there have been plenty of times when I have given in to the thought that God’s throne is a two-seater. You’ve probably laid aside your faith in His sovereignty and dwelt in the fret over the solution at times, too. But His domain reaches down to the fish in the sea. We have nothing going on in our lives that He is not Lord over. There is no worry or situation that is too enormous for our faith in Jesus. His domain is astonishing in its power, but it shouldn’t astonish us in its reality. After all, He is God.
Charge
As we seek Him today, let His astonishing power and domain reach into those places in your life that you think are out of reach. Consider nothing is too big or too small for God to manage.
