The Holy Spirit Resides in Us

Let the growl of your unseen stomach and the rise and fall of your hidden lungs remind you of the power of God within you through His Holy Spirit.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Luke 1:35, ” And the angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.’ ”

Background

This may seem like a strange question, but I’ll ask it anyway. Have you checked on your spleen lately? What I mean by that is, have you taken time recently to make sure that your spleen is doing ok? Or even that you do, in fact, have a spleen? How about your kidneys? Are you positive that you have two of them? And your pancreas, is it where it should be and functioning properly? While we’re at it, why not inquire about the brain? What makes you think that you have one? That’s the question that could be asked about any of these organs, isn’t it? To be sure, very few of us have actually seen any of these inside our bodies. We’re familiar with the anatomy drawings of the skinless man that shows where everything belongs. You might even have seen an X-ray that shows some of what’s inside, perhaps even of yourself. But have you looked within and caught a glimpse of it with your own eyes? Doubtful.

Application

So, what about the Holy Spirit? Got a look at Him lately? Of course not. Much like the organs that you’ll probably never see, the Spirit who cannot be seen reveals Himself through what He does. And boy, what He is able to do. After He descended upon the virgin Mary with all of God’s power, nine months later she gave birth to the Son of God. A young girl, who had yet to attempt to conceive a child, was visited by the Holy Spirit, and God’s Son was then found to be in her womb. And how do we know this? Did we or Mary or anyone see it? No. But we know it to be true by all that occurred thereafter. And somehow, that same Spirit, the One who was so involved in the birth of Jesus, is the same Spirit that lives within you and me. Not some of Him. Not a feeble version, 2,000 years older than He was in Nazareth. The very same. And to know that is to see the evidence of it. He’s not to stay hidden like the organs beneath our skin. He’s to show His power as He works through us. He’s given you a new heart, whether you can see it or not. Let Him work through you so the whole world can see it.

Charge

As we seek Him today, let the growl of your unseen stomach and the rise and fall of your hidden lungs remind you of the power of God within you through His Holy Spirit.
