A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – Note the illustration of the cross. The vertical section is larger and rooted firmly in the ground, pointing upward toward God. The horozontal section is smaller, secondary, and attached securely to the vertical. It was where Jesus’s arms were outstretched, opened wide, as a picture of His love for mankind.
The source of our compassion for humanity must be rooted in our relationship with God through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross.
To focus on the horozontal relationship with our neighbor without tapping into the love of God is to add to our own pride and self worth, rather than to our Creator.
Matthew 6:2 – “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
More significantly, to reject God is to recieve a reward from those we help but squander the eternal acceptance offered by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.
The born-again Biblical Christian begins with a focus on the vertical, rooted in the ground, looking toward eternity with God in Heaven as the source of power. Only then do we reach out to our “neighbors” under God’s authority, His care, in His service, rather than in our own strength and benefit.
