Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Philippians 2:5, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.”

Background

When I say the name Spock, what comes to mind? Probably Star Trek , pointy ears, no emotion, and a bad haircut. Certainly I think of high intelligence, superior strength, the Vulcan nerve pinch, Captain Kirk’s best friend, and the Vulcan mind meld. Now this mind meld was a fascinating ability that Vulcans had to read the mind of someone else, and if so desired, transmit their mind to that person. The process, which involved the Vulcan simply placing his fingertips on the face of the other person, created a sort of single consciousness between the two people for those few moments. It was a powerful way to obtain information, pass on certain characteristics, and share the deepest of emotions, and the Vulcans used it with great success. A person could actually carry around within them the personality of another if it were transferred to them.

Application

And so I ask, doesn’t that sound amazingly similar to our verse for today? It’s as if Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, knew of this verse or, better yet, had seen it lived out in a believer and included its essence in the futuristic race of the Vulcans. For the power and transformation that came with the mind meld is a wonderful reminder of the power and transformation that comes with the mind of Christ ruling within each of us. Look at the verses before and after our verse for today. The preceding verses mention “like-minded,” “same love,” “one accord,” “one mind,” “lowliness of mind,” “esteem others better than himself,” and “interest of others.” And immediately following verse five is the amazing description of Christ’s humility as He left His throne on High to go to the cross for us. Having the mind of Christ in us is powerful enough to make us completely take our eyes off of ourselves and transform us into humble servants void of selfishness and conceit. Jesus gives us His mind that we might be His body here on earth. In a strange way, that’s a “no-brainer.” But it’s a sure case of being in our right mind.

Charge

As we seek Him today, ask God to place His mind in you, replacing your selfish plans and personal agendas. Examine how much of you and how much of Jesus is on display for others to see.
