Providing insight on the intersection of contemporary issues and theology, based on a Biblical Christian Worldview.

“So Jesus says whosoever believes in me shall have everlasting life…

Do you believe that? It’s a yes or no question."

A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – This comment came from one who is a seeker but, as an adult who has been inoculated with dead Christianity, is struggling to see it’s faith, rather than facts, that is the basis for accepting Christ as personal Lord and Savior.

As we witness to folks who are struggling, we need to be clear on what it means to “believe.” My response to this reader follows …

My Response

No, it is not a “yes” or “no” question. Why, because ….

James 2:19 - You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

The demons (Satan included) know the Bible, know the power of angels and God, and know Jesus as fully man and fully God. So “believes in [Jesus]” applies to evil beings who are destined to spend eternity in a real and literal Hell.

The word “belief” must therefore be narrowed to form a definition that results in salvation. That definition comes from the Bible which offers hundreds of verses merged into a single salvific theology, best summarized by two statements made by Paul.

“Everlasting life” comes from a “belief” where one accepts that God offered His Son as a sacrifice for our sins and that we must accept Him as our Lord and Savior ….

Ephesians 2:8-9 - For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Romans 10:9 - If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

This is a heart change that comes ultimately through faith.

Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
