One could argue that we do not invest time reading books on whether an apple will fall down or up when dropped… or if we put our hand on a hot stove, will it burn. However, there are many in the scientific community who study the principles underlying these outcomes to better understand them.
If one’s beliefs are core, they rest on a very high level of confidence. They form the foundation of how we view the world in this life and, for core beliefs within the Christian faith, the life to come. Of course, in the case of a Biblical Christian Worldview (which can be supported by facts), in the end (similar to concepts like evolution), our hope is founded on our faith. What we have faith in should form our core theology. This is true regardless of those who may not accept these beliefs, even to the point of considering them ridiculous.
To Those Without Faith
As Biblical Christians, we should totally understand the perspective of the majority of humanity… basically that faith in God and the Bible is not the same as gravity (an apple falls down not up). The fact is that there are two planes of knowledge, one largely provable by science and observation (even though at one time science believed maggots were generated by rotting meat) and a second plane of truth comes through faith.
Muslim, Hindus, Christians, etc. all see our core faith as immutable. If that was not true then it should not be a part of our core worldview.
So, to deconstruct our core beliefs is not so much off-limits out of fear of change or loss of faith. It is just not of value to question a foundation built on the belief there is a supernatural realm where God rules and has provided man with an instruction manual for life, the Bible. Though there are ample examples of prophesies fulfilled and miracles performed, most of mankind reject what they cannot touch and scientifically replicate. In the final state of all religions, we are left with what atheists find unacceptable… faith. Consequently, there should be no expectation that one without that faith can accept our unwavering core beliefs. Ultimately the Lord is in control, even of our faith.
2 Corinthians 5:7 for we walk by faith, not by sight
Hebrews 11:1 – Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:6 – And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Conclusion
Finally, there is a difference between “studying” our core beliefs and “questioning” those views. Studying is desirable as we grow in our faith (sanctification), just like the scientist digging deeper into why apples fall from trees. Questioning core beliefs, in most cases, should not be worth our time. This is especially true of Christianity because the source of our “questions” often comes from our own sin nature or the evil one. However, the source of our desire to study God’s Word comes from the Holy Spirit.
Col. 1:23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
