How can the largest evangelical denomination in America simultaneously report rising baptisms, growing weekly attendance, expanding small group participation, and essentially flat financial giving—while shedding more than 3 percent of its members in a single year? According to the latest Annual Church Profile compiled by Lifeway Research, total SBC membership fell from roughly 12.72 million in 2024 to 12,331,954 in 2025. Yet baptisms rose nearly 5 percent to 263,075—the fifth consecutive year of increase and a milestone the convention has not achieved in 75 years. Weekly worship attendance climbed more than 3 percent to nearly 4.5 million, while small group and Sunday School participation also rose more than 3 percent to over 2.6 million. Undesignated receipts grew by less than 1 percent to about $9.64 billion, essentially holding flat. The Female Pastor Controversy Sharpens the Divide
One theological flashpoint clarifying this separation is the ongoing dispute over women serving as pastors. The 2025 SBC Annual Meeting in Dallas again debated a constitutional amendment limiting the pastoral office to qualified men only. As Christianity Today reported on the SBC’s June 2025 votes, 61 percent of messengers voted in favor, but the measure fell short of the required two-thirds majority.
