Pride was the First Sin

Society puffs up man while God desires a heart of modesty.

Webster defines pride as, “reasonable self-esteem confidence and satisfaction in oneself”.

This would seem to be a positive statement on one’s ability to overcome obstacles, accomplish tasks successfully, and, be “proud” of oneself for a job well done. However, God’s ways are above [different than] our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9), and so the Bible sees Webster’s definition in a negative light.

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom. – Proverbs 11:2

One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor. – Proverbs 29:23

In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” – Psalm 10:4

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6

Pride in oneself runs counter to humility and resulting submission toward God. The more confidence we have in the flesh, (Phil. 3:1-4) the less dependence we have on God. The less dependence we have on Him, the more willing we are to chart our own path, which further separates us from Him.

This sin of pride is what the serpent used to draw Adam and Eve to the forbidden fruit…

“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” – Genesis 3:5

However, even before that, the sin of pride drove Lucifer to become Satan. Scripture on this transformation can be drawn from Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14.

You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you… Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you. – Ezekiel 28:15,17

The fall of Lucifer, and subsequently many believe a third of the angels, (Rev. 12:4,9) was due to sin in the supernatural realm, long before the forbidden fruit.

Today, pride continues to destroy mankind as we compare ourselves to others rather than to the Perfect… and humbly submit to the Creator of us all. Humility should be one of the marks of a Biblical Christian, sadly missing in many of us.
