A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – The full comment from this secular reader follows:
“Of all the Christian beliefs, the Heaven/Hell concept is the most offensive to anyone with real morals. Any fool can see that eternal punishment is utterly immoral. Justice requires that the punishment fit the crime; it’s a cornerstone of modern ethics and civilization. The idea that God is loving and fair is obviously in direct opposition to the concept of Hell. It’s one of the main reasons cited for people losing their faith.”
My Response
Of course the issue of Heaven/Hell is the most offensive of all the beliefs of a Biblical Christian worldview. Who wants to believe a loving God would send many of His children to Hell for eternity? Who in our secular culture, promoting the social gospel of equity over equality, would ever accept such a dichotomy of cleanly defined lines between good vs. evil, on the other side of the grave, from an omnipotent God?
However, the problem is that we are not omniscient and so we have a choice, (1) to accept on faith the things we don’t understand are still valid, or (2) to reject them. This is true even if God’s love of man and His judgment of man seem to be an oxymoron.
1 John 4:16 - So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
Matthew 25:46 - And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
