A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – We are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Paul lamented on his inability to do what he knew the Lord commanded him by saying…
Romans 7:22-24 - For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
We are no different, and likely much worse in the depth of our sin compared to Paul. More to the point of the title of this post, do we tend to obey in some areas in order to rationalize the continuance of our bad behavior in others?
Perhaps for many of us, the desire to steal from our neighbor (the 8th Commandment) has not been all that hard to accept. However, do we look across the lawn at their boat or car and wish we had one as well (the 10th Commandment)? Is pride the sin we don’t obey while not stealing is one we do obey?
James 2:10 - For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.
This verse… typically directed to unbelievers who think that being a good person most of the time justifies one for Heaven… can also remind us as believers that selectively obeying God on some things does not absolve us of the sins we continue to commit.
Dependence on God comes from an active willingness to set all our bad behavior aside and seek Him. This is a heart of complete submission rather than selective repentance.
