Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Exodus 20:8, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
Background
Mother’s Day was back in May. It was the day we honor and remember our moms. In June, we celebrate Father’s Day. In late April there is Administrative Professionals Day. And sometime within the next year, each of us will have our very own birthday. Each of these special days is intended to recognize and pay tribute to a particular group of people. On their day, the person of honor is treated differently than they are the rest of the year. There are gifts involved, time spent together, and intentional effort is made to thank the person for what they mean and for who they are. A few days ago was also the Lord’s day. It happens to come around every week rather than once a year. But it also involves gifts, time, and gratitude. There is effort made to appreciate what He has done and who He is. And I think it’s fair to say that for so many of us, we treat the Lord differently on His day. At so many levels, whether in our dress or our speech or how we spend our time, we are different on Sundays than the other days of the week.
Application
Now, many of us would say that mothers deserve much more than one day a year. Few could argue that mothers don’t give and sacrifice far more than anyone else, and quite possibly more than we will ever know. So, clearly you can see the train of thought concerning our Lord and His one day of the week. It makes me wonder how our worship and fellowship got distilled down to one-seventh of the week. I recognize that there have always been certain times for God’s people to gather together, but I would also hope that those times were intended to just be a corporate time to continue what each individual was experiencing in their daily walk with God. But if it’s not, if “His day” is extremely different for you, then don’t change your Sunday. Instead, carry it over into the rest of the week. Let everywhere you go be God’s cathedral, and serve Him with the gladness that filled your heart on that day.
Charge
As we seek Him today, make today the Lord’s day. In a way that’s unusual for a weekday, worship and fellowship and give thanks like it’s the only chance you’ll have to do it all year.
