Interesting Facts on Christian Nobel Prize Winners

One would think atheists would be predominant... guess again.

Atheists and agnostics reject religion as a panacea for the weak-minded. They are all about science as the basis for everything that is observable, replicable, and provable. It is just a matter of time before all things will fit neatly into the scientific method, having totally rejected, or at least significantly questioned (i.e., agnostics), the supernatural realm.

Further, there are many who believe the committee that awards the Nobel Prizes is skewed liberal and anti-religious. There are six committees, with the Norwegian Nobel Committee serving as both a working and deciding body for the Peace Prize (just awarded to Maria Machado from Venezuela). Other Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of physics, chemistry, psychology or medicine, literature, and economic sciences.

Given the focus on the sciences, one would expect atheists and agnostics would form the greatest percentage of Nobel Prize winners over the last century. Below are the surprising facts:

  • Over 65% of Nobel Prize winners identified as Christian. And, among the science awards, Christians received 64% in physics, 65% in medicine, and 74% in chemistry.
  • Twenty percent were Jewish, yet .02% of the world’s population is Jewish.
  • Less than one percent were Muslim, yet 20% of the world’s population is Muslim.
  • Just less than 11% were atheists or agnostics. Further, 35% of those who won were in the field of literature, with scientific awards being only a fraction (7% chemistry, 9% medicine, and 5% physics).

When those who reject the reality of a Creator of the universe stand on the laurels of science as their god, believers can graciously respond that having a Biblical Christian worldview is not a deterrent to science, but instead there is clear evidence of its value.
