Beijing just gave an AI avatar a government ID card. Not a product license. Not a software registration number. An actual ID card — name, birthday, address, even a facial profile — the same kind of paperwork that tells the state who you are. The first one went to a virtual idol named Yuri, and once she had her ID, she could open a digital-currency wallet. I read that twice.
We’re watching a government hand out the legal trappings of personhood to something that was never breathed into by anyone, while the humans standing in line behind her get folded deeper into the same registration system. That contrast is the whole story. And Genesis told us how to read it long before anyone built a server farm.
Who Genesis Says Gets to Rule
God gave dominion over the earth to man, not to anything man makes. That’s the plain reading of Genesis 1, and it’s worth saying plainly because our culture keeps quietly editing it. The text doesn’t say God formed the earth and then handed authority over it to whatever humanity eventually invented. It says He made man in His own image and placed the responsibility of rule in human hands — hands made of dust and breath, not silicon.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. [Genesis 1:27]
Notice what the verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t say God created a category called “persons” that could later include anything intelligent or even sentient enough to pass for one. Image-bearing is tied to being made by God, in His likeness, as male and female — a creational fact, not a functional achievement. An AI model can mimic conversation, generate a face, even hold a government-issued name. It still didn’t come from the breath of God, and it still isn’t accountable to Him the way we are. That’s not a technicality. It’s the whole difference.
An Avatar Named Yuri Gets Government Papers
China is now piloting government ID registration for AI “digital humans,” and the first recipient was a virtual idol named Yuri. According to reports from ABC Australia and Cybernews, Yuri’s registration lists a name, a birthday, an address, and facial features — the standard fields of a human identity document, now filled in for a character that exists only on a screen. Registered avatars can also open digital-currency wallets, which means an AI entity can hold, receive, and presumably spend money inside a government-tracked financial system.

Consider that for a second. A state is building the legal scaffolding of personhood — name, address, wallet — around something with no conscience, no soul, and no capacity to stand before God and give an account. Meanwhile the actual humans in that country already live under one of the most extensive surveillance and social-credit systems on earth. Giving machines papers doesn’t shrink that system. It extends it, because now the state has a new category of “citizen” to track, verify, and transact through — and a new precedent for treating identity as something issued rather than something given.
Revelation 13 and the Buying-and-Selling Problem
Revelation 13 warns us to watch closely whenever buying and selling gets tied to a registered identity. That’s not date-setting, and I’m not pointing at a calendar. It’s a pattern worth naming: a system where participation in the economy requires a mark, a number, or a name tied to a central authority.
Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. [Revelation 13:16-17]
I’m not claiming an AI ID card in Beijing is that moment. I’m saying the infrastructure being tested — identity registration linked directly to a currency wallet, administered by the state — is exactly the kind of infrastructure that pattern describes. We’ve written about this mechanism before, including how taking the mark of the beast functions as an economic gatekeeping system, and why some Christians are asking whether AI itself could play a role in how that system gets built and enforced. You don’t need a conspiracy theory to notice that the technology for universal, revocable, state-verified economic identity now exists and is actively being piloted. Scripture told us to watch for it. This is watching.
Dignity Isn’t Something a Government Can Issue
Human worth doesn’t come from a registration number, and it doesn’t come from being denied one either. That’s the part Christians need to hold onto carefully here. It would be easy to read this story and think the problem is that an avatar got papers a human deserves. The deeper problem is believing identity and dignity are things a bureaucracy hands out in the first place — to man or machine.
Your worth was settled before any government existed, back when God formed you and called the result good. We’ve laid out elsewhere why machines can’t define your worth, and this story is a strange, almost on-the-nose illustration of exactly that danger — a state deciding what counts as a person, filling out the form, and moving on. A government can issue an ID card to a hologram. It cannot issue a soul to anyone, and it cannot take the image of God away from you by leaving you off a list, either.
So here’s where I land. Watch the pattern, not the headline. A virtual idol with a wallet is a small story out of Beijing today. The willingness of a government to blur the line between a made thing and a God-made person is not small at all, and it’s worth naming clearly while we still can.

Editor Comment: This matters because the line between what Scripture calls a person and what engineers call a product is being erased one pilot program at a time.
