God Has the Power to Calm the Storms in Our Lives

Remember who has the power to calm any storm. Remember who had the power to stay on that cross, and rise again from the dead.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Nahum 1:3, “The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. The Lord has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet.”

Background

I saw part of a news show last night, and the reporter was doing a story about a young family that experienced the disaster of the Alabama tornadoes months ago. This particular couple happened to be directly in the path of the storm, wherein the winds reached more than 200 miles per hour. As the husband, wife, and her mother huddled up together, holding on to each other for dear life, the tornado struck and completely annihilated their house, tossing each of them more than a football field away from where they were hunched over just seconds earlier. The mother was killed, and the husband lost most of the use of his right hand and the vision in his left eye as a piece of wood went through his face. The wife, in addition to losing her mom, had her right foot nearly cut off, and almost lost her unborn baby.

Application

Yes, she was five months pregnant, and went flying through the air as if hit by a nine iron. When she arrived at the hospital, the doctors immediately discovered that her placenta had been torn and contractions were beginning, as her body began the process of delivering this premature baby. So the doctors turned her over upside down and kept her that way in her room for several days. Amazingly, the tear began to heal and the contractions stopped. Several months later, although the new mom has difficulty walking and the dad has only one good hand and eye, they consider themselves blessed as they stare down in the crib of their miracle baby. The Lord had His way in that whirlwind and storm. One mother, about to become a grandma for the first time, never got to see her grandson. The new mom said the last voice she heard in the storm was her mom telling her she loved her, but she didn’t get a chance to say it back to her. Storms come in many forms. They affect people very differently. Some blow houses and people across a field, while others do their damage within our souls. We know the Lord is great in power. Will you trust in His power while the storm is raging? Will you trust it once the damage is done and the healing is needed?

Charge

As we seek Him today, recognize God’s awesome power as He displays it in your everyday life. Remember who has the power to calm any storm. Remember who had the power to stay on that cross, and rise again from the dead.
