Scripture
Our verse for today comes from Psalm 106:21, ” They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt. ”
Background
I used to work with my dad. And actually, that was a good thing, because it gave my dad the opportunity to understand some things about me that he could never quite grasp while I was growing up. And one of them was that I was forgetful. Working in the office together, he would see me as an adult forgetting to do simple tasks that I needed to do or was planning on doing. I might forget to make a phone call, or neglect to bring something from home that I needed that day. You see, my dad never forgot anything. He didn’t even write things down to remind himself. He simply made a mental note of it, and it was done. He never even used an alarm clock in the mornings. So when I would forget to do things at work, my dad could finally comprehend that I really was forgetting to do those things that I claimed I forgot to do when I was a child. For all the chores he left for me to do after school that went undone, or the requests he made of me throughout the day that I never remembered, he finally believed I wasn’t lying when I said I forgot. Unfortunately for me back then, my dad had an unpleasant, rather painful way to remind me via my backside.
Application
But this life lesson has at least convinced me to trust my own kids and grant that maybe they actually did forget when they claimed to have forgotten. I learned that they need grace from me, especially if I want them to learn about the grace that God offers. For that’s what He offered His children, even as they forgot Him and His great deliverance. He had to remind them, and that was no picnic, but He knew what they were made of. He knew that they, like we do today, forget the unforgettable. So now I’m inclined to consider the shoes that someone else is walking around in before I presume. I don’t expect my kids to have all of my good traits and none of my bad ones. But I still forget. Today it might be my lunch, tomorrow it might be something more eternal. But He’ll never forget me. And He’ll never forget you. Remember that the next time you forget to set your alarm.
Charge
As we seek Him today, praise God that we can trust in a God who has no flaws or weaknesses. Thank Him for remembering His covenant and for forgetting every sin we will ever commit.
