Our verse for today comes from 2 Samuel 17:22, ” So David and all the people who were with him arose and crossed over the Jordan. By morning light not one of them was left who had not gone over the Jordan. ” 

Background

Valentine’s Day. President’s Day. Groundhog Day. February is known for these days of celebration. Less well-known are a few other days that occur in February, such as Thank a Mailman Day, Toothache Day, Spay Day, Umbrella Day, and Clean Out Your Computer Day.  In fact, there is even a Blame Someone Else Day, which always falls on the first Friday the 13th of the year. Go figure. But besides all the foods that are recognized during this month, like the bagel, baked Alaska, frozen yogurt, pizza, cabbage, plum pudding, fettuccine, and cream cheese brownies, one particular sweet always shows up, whether at your front door, the grocery store parking lot, or on desks in your office. That, of course, is the Girl Scout Cookie. When I worked for the moving company after college, we were the local distributors of every cookie that was eaten within the ten or twelve surrounding counties. Every day for a couple weeks, truck after truck would show up at our warehouse, loaded down with thousands of cookies. As ” cookie Saturday ” approached, we would begin to load our trucks for the delivery of over 70,000 cases, each of which had twelve boxes of cookies inside. One year, we were exceptionally busy and the loading was running behind. As Friday night ebbed into Saturday morning, I was still putting orders together in the warehouse. Finally, as the morning light approached on that frigid morning, the final truck was loaded, and it was time to deliver. Over the next hour or so, the boxes that for weeks filled practically every available square foot of space in the trailers and warehouse were gone. Just like that. 

Application

Mornings can be like that. What’s old can be made new. The tired are refreshed. Forgiveness is sought and shared. Your nights might be long. But you need to remember and believe that God can get you across your Jordan. He can wipe away what is overwhelming, and He can fill you up where there is lacking. He can do it just like that. 

Charge

As we seek Him today, let your worry and dread be overwhelmed by God’s peace and promise of faithfulness. Let the morning light remind you of His love and grace.
