Just a few short years ago (2021), according to a study done by the Survey Center on American Life, Gen Z’s (13-28 year olds) ranked higher than any other age demographic in the percentage of those who rejected all forms of religion (34%) in America.

However, according to new research by the Barna Group, there has been a significant resurgence, at least in church attendance, by both Millennials and Gen Z’s. Published in September of 2025, below shows the number of times each demographic attended a church service and offers longitudinal data on increases over time.

It should be pointed out that attending “church” is not the same as being born-again into the Biblical Christian faith. Encouragingly, according to Lifeway research, in the Southern Baptist Convention, baptisms have increased by 47 percent between 2021 and 2023 (averaged across all demographics), even in the face of declining attendance overall.
Finally, none of these statistics incorporate the most recent impact from the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Perhaps we are seeing a new wave of spiritual interest that will revitalize the church as the Gen Z’s graduate into the working world and have families of their own.
Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
