Did Adam and Eve go to Heaven or Hell?

Engaging our Sanctified Imagination

Obviously Adam and Eve came before Moses and God’s message through the Old Testament. There is nothing definitive in the Bible that suggests the final state of the first two humans who’s sin resulted in them leaving the Garden of Eden.

Salvation comes, not from General Revelation (general truths that can be known about God), but from Special Revelation (God revealing Himself through miraculous means, which includes His written Word and His Son, Jesus Christ). Today, with the New Testament in our hands, we know salvation is the result of God’s grace and our faith in Jesus Christ as our personal Savior and Lord.

Ephesians 2:8-9 – For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Romans 10:9 – If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

One can wonder how many times, and for how long, Adam and Eve walked and talked with God prior to the fall. And, we can only speculate what their discussions included, ranging from general to special revelation.

The question becomes, did Adam and Eve know the basic truths of the gospel message?

Speculation using Sanctified Imagination

We can certainly assume that God made it clear to Adam and Eve that they had disobeyed His command….

Genesis 2:17 – but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Clearly things were changing rapidly in the Garden when God provided garments (skins) for them to wear, indicating animal sacrifices. Perhaps a bridge too far, but many theologians believe this was a clear foreshadowing of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for mankind’s sins on the cross, and that Adam and Eve would have understood that.

Adam and Eve likely did not know the name of their Savior, Jesus Christ. However, many do believe, as with the Old Testament saints, they certainly knew God and that He would provide an ultimate sacrifice for their sins. In that sense, though by no means definitive, most Biblical Christian scholars of the Bible believe Adam and Eve are in Heaven (details here).
