Excerpt: The devotion explores the question of identity, challenging readers to consider who they truly are beyond their occupations or external labels. It emphasizes the importance of aligning one’s identity with their faith in Jesus Christ, encouraging readers to reflect this in their actions and choices.
Scripture
Our verse for today comes from John 1:19, “Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?'”
Background
We do a lot that shows the world who we are. Our e-mails are usually signed with our name and some kind of title. Many of us use our license plates to broadcast a message that’s meaningful to us. Sites like Facebook, Instagram and X are built around our fascination with telling all who will listen what is on our mind or what we are doing. We wear shirts and hats that advertise for our favorite teams and causes, and our homes and offices are decorated to reflect our personalities and what’s important to us. So, when someone comes up to you and asks you who you are, what is your response? When you meet someone for the first time, how do you introduce yourself? Our natural inclination is to say what our occupation is, especially if it’s one that might get a nice reaction. But is that who you are? What if you don’t have a job? Do you no longer have an identity? Are we content to be known primarily by what we do to earn a paycheck? Is that perhaps why we are so attached to the paycheck and the things that come with it?
Application
Now, if Jesus was standing here and asked us who we were, we would surely say something spiritual, like we were His children, or we were His followers or servants. And that speaks volumes to how we shape ourselves to match our audience. If we gave the spiritual answer in a business meeting, it might create an awkward moment or get you some strange looks. And then? Well, maybe, just maybe, it might begin a conversation about something a little more permanent than a sports team or a work project. And if being a follower of Jesus is who we are, and our job is really just where we happen to follow Him for much of the day, perhaps we should think about who we are. Maybe we’re not quite who we think we are. Maybe there’s a part of our identity that is occupying too much space. One day you might instantly go from a business meeting to Jesus asking you who you are. It’s important that your heart has the right answer.
Charge
As we seek Him today, let your necklace, or your wristband, or your t-shirt, or your bumper sticker reflect who you really are. Ask Jesus to make you who He wants you to be.
