Cleaning Up

Realize that the dirt is not just going to fall off on its own. Take an inventory of your spiritual wardrobe and get busy cleaning.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from 2 Timothy 2:21, ” Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work. ”

Background

Our kids have a lot of clothes. And it’s not just because we have a bunch of kids. It’s truly embarrassing to look and see just how many pieces of clothing each individual child has. Closets and drawers and bins are full of them, made that way mostly by the generosity and kindness of friends and family who have given so generously to us. My budget certainly wouldn’t make possible the extensive variety from which the children are able to choose. But what’s funny is the tendency for several of the kids to dress as if their wardrobe suffers from the limitations of my budget. Day after day they will seek out and attempt to wear the same two or three outfits, completely ignoring the miniature department store that is at their fingertips. However, there is one condition that impedes their selections, and that is the washing of the laundry. Many times the turnaround from dirty to clean is not as fast as someone may prefer, and then another option must be chosen. But there is no compromise when it comes to wearing the same dirty clothes again. They must be washed before they get worn.

Application

And come to think of it, it’s just that simple for more than just clothing. Before you and I can be used by God for His good, we must be cleansed. And that’s a telling situation if you’ve wondered recently why you aren’t being used by Him. The truth may be that there is some cleaning that needs to take place in your life. Something dishonorable may be preventing God from choosing you, much like the dirt on my kids’ clothes prevents them from being able to be worn. And it can happen quickly. Yesterday’s pristine condition can disappear without a moment’s notice. And so, the cleansing must be just as immediate and thorough. It’s the only way to get rid of the gunk. So if you desire to be used by the Master, you can let Him know by cleaning out what’s dishonorable. That’s the way He wants you to handle your dirty laundry.

Charge

As we seek Him today, realize that the dirt is not just going to fall off on its own. Take an inventory of your spiritual wardrobe and get busy cleaning.
