Jesus said: “Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child, shall not enter it” (Mat 18:3). In His parables, Jesus used natural events we could relate to, to proclaim spiritual things to which we cannot relate.
What is so special about child-like faith?
It is the infinite faith little children have in their parents. Inevitably, in their growing process, children learn that their parents are not super-human, and they lose that faith, much to the chagrin of the parents of teenagers.
Jesus said: Unless we have that same kind of child-like, infinite faith in God, we will not enter into the kingdom of God. When believers are first saved, they are like newborn “babes in Christ” who know that our God can do anything. They have the child-like faith in God Jesus is talking about.
In His parables, Jesus used natural events we could relate to, and He used the same principle in the area of child-like faith, relating the faith of young, natural children with children of God and their faith.
Again, what is so special about child-like faith?
It is the infinite faith little children have in their parents. Sadly, just as natural children gradually lose that kind of faith in their parents, so newborn Christians learn that all things don’t turn out the way they thought, and we begin to have doubts. Rather than blaming unrealistic expectations, we start limiting God in our understanding.
Remember that Jesus died for you and me personally and that most of the Bible speaks to us individually.
While the falling away of children is unavoidable because their parents are human, this should not happen to Christians. As Christians grow up from babes in Christ to adult believers, our understanding of God should mature along with that. Sadly, most Christians concentrate more on what our Father requires of us, than on who God is and what our purpose is in life. God’s plan for us is to transform us into His image in this life and the Bible tells us that God is using this life with all its failures and successes to accomplish this. Knowing this should help each one of us to navigate through rough waters, but can we really be sure that God is able to come through? That is where we need to put our doubting mind to rest and learn to understand God better.
God is not limited by time, and He knew that man would sin before He ever set out to create the heavens and the earth. He already sees every minute of our lives till the very end, as if we had already lived our whole lives. Thus, when He tells us through His servants that He is using All things to make us more into the image of His Son and that we will be like Him in the next life, our natural mind can accept that He is able to do that and there will be no doubt in our minds. Thus, the same hard times that could crush us will instead serve to strengthen our faith.
We need to constantly study to understand God better, for the devil will constantly challenge our faith.
