Providing straightforward analysis on the intersection of contemporary issues and theology, based on a Biblical Christian Worldview.

“Biblical Christians are slaves and free at the same time.”

This seeming oxymoron speaks to the complexity of the Christian life.

Quote Source – Jeff Hilles

A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – A secular reader wrote…”I see that you’re training people to serve God. What I learned has nothing to do with serving God. People who served gods were slaves. Today we are free because there are no gods left ruling over the earth. Why go back to being slaves to the gods?”

My Response

“You are correct on one point… Biblical Christians are “slaves” of God…

Romans 1:1 - "Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God."

But, Biblical Christians are also “free” under God’s grace and love.

Galatians 5:1 - For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
John 8:36 - So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

There is an understandable resistance to follow Christ as one’s Lord, partly due to the perception that it will restrict our freedoms to do what we want to do, when we want to do it. Though the Bible is an instruction manual for the life of the believer, and, He does expect to be obeyed, the Lord is abounding in grace and love for His children (Psalm 103:8). Further, and more importantly, His commands are established to make our lives more joyful and fruitful (not in monetary ways) as we prepare to spend eternity with the Trinity.”

We are all Servants

The definition of “servant” is, “a person in the service of another”.

In a broader way, we are actually servants of many things in life, whether we are willing to accept that viewpoint or not. We are a servant of the need for sleep, for food, for money, for clothing, etc. We are a servant for members of our family, for paying our taxes, for following the law. If we have a job we are accountable to, in that sense, we’re a servant of our employer. Finally, those in the government, doing the people’s business, are often called “Public Servants.” The list goes on and on.

As Biblical Christians, our lives are to be servants of Christ, while also having freedom in service to Him. For outsiders, it is a mystery, but not for those who have the Holy Spirit in their hearts.

1 Corinthians 7:22 – For he who was called in the Lord as a slave is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a slave of Christ.

Those who have come to Christ late in life, such as myself, can clearly see the amazing difference between the freedom the lost are referring to and the freedom we enjoy as servants of our risen Lord and Savior. There is no comparison, on either side of the grave.

POSTSCRIPT: From a reader…

Love the scriptures you have used here. You have reminded me of a few of my favorite scriptures. Still remember the day these were enlightened to me.

Galatians 4:6–7 And because you are sons. God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son then an heir of God through Christ.
John 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing, but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from my Father I have made known to you.

The responder to my post is correct…. As believers, we are more than servants in the eyes of God. We are friends, sons, and heirs of what the Lord has provided for us… the Holy Spirit on earth and eternity with Him in Heaven. What a blessing!
