Providing straightforward analysis on the intersection of contemporary issues and theology, based on a Biblical Christian Worldview.

“Atheism requires no faith.”

We all have faith, religion, and a worldview as we look beyond the grave.

A Biblical Christian worldview perspective – Many atheists stand on the premise that their beliefs do not require any faith, nor are they a form of religion. In fact, the opposite is true. Below is a response from an atheist.

Atheism requires no faith. A theist is a person who believes in the existence of a god (or gods; see Hinduism), and an atheist is a person who does not believe in the existence of a god or gods. Where is the “faith” to not believe? There isn’t any. Atheism is a stance of disbelief.

My Response

An atheist is, as you said, a person who does not believe in god or gods. However, there is a level of faith to espouse that worldview when one looks at the universe around us and asks the question, where did it all come from? To say that science has not reached a point of answering questions such as where the dot of creation came from requires the believer to accept it … by faith.

Atheism is, in fact, a religion … it’s just one that typically does not believe in the supernatural. Science is the foundation of that belief structure. Interestingly, Webster offers two definitions of atheism that make this point perfectly ….

  • “A lack of belief or a strong disbelief in the existence of a god or any gods”
  • “A philosophical or religious position characterized by disbelief in the existence of a god or any gods”

Further, one of the broader Webster definitions of “faith” is, “something that is believed, especially with strong conviction.”

Atheists have as strong a conviction that there is no supernatural realm as most other false religions believe in their worldview.

All of mankind are religious and have faith in their worldview. Some will be correct enough to find a life of joy on the other side of the grave (Heaven). However, the Bible sadly offers the observation that the path to Heaven is narrow and the road away from God is wide.

Matthew 7:13-14 - Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
