Are you worshiping something other than Jesus?

Confess your tendency to worship something other than Him, and make your day a treasure for Him.

With a Subtitle: Confess your tendency to worship something other than Him, and make your day a treasure for Him.

A brief Excerpt: The wise men’s journey exemplifies true worship, making their entire lives an offering to Jesus. We also need to make our daily lives a similar offering.

Scripture

Our verse for today comes from Matthew 2:11, “And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

Background

How do you worship a two year old? What can you really do to give honor to someone who might be just out of diapers? For that matter, what could several wise, important men from another country do for a toddler who spoke another language and could barely feed himself? How do you take all of your earthly wisdom and the treasures of your life and pay homage to a child who was just learning how to speak? These men travelled hundreds of miles to walk into a stranger’s home and worship a child they found by following a star in the sky. Chances are that no one could understand the other. Certainly Mary and Joseph were not expecting any visitors from the east. But here they were, all in one room, and the guests had come to see their Son. Their journey could not have been easy nor comfortable, and their stay at the house may have been brief. But none of that mattered. They had come to worship. It was their purpose; it was their calling. The distance did not affect their resolve, and the discomfort could not deter them, either. The cost of their treasures? No one can say. Perhaps they somehow knew it really belonged to Him anyway. But every mile they travelled by camel, every time they looked up and believed that star, every person in town they asked for directions, it was all offered to Him in worship. Of course, they did give Him lavish gifts that would have astonished Mary and Joseph. But that might have been the easiest part for these wealthy men. No, the entire journey was their worship, and it must be for us.

Application

Some can write a check every week but won’t buy a Happy Meal for a man on the street. Others are at church every Sunday or for the meals, but don’t expect to see them any other days. Many love a good sermon, but that’s because they don’t think it applies to them. Still others know forgiveness, but just don’t ask them to sit beside someone who needs forgiving. Our journey is our worship. Lay it all at the feet of a Child.

Charge

As we seek Him today, acknowledge that there is some area of your life that needs to be given back to Jesus. Confess your tendency to worship something other than Him, and make your entire day a treasure to present to Him.
