Scripture
Our verse for today comes from John 14:6, ” Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’ “
Background
Where are you going? With the one life you have been given, where are you going? That’s something that you have to decide. It’s the value of life, to choose where you will go and how you will use it. But time doesn’t stop and wait for you to make up your mind. The days just keep right on rolling, and each one that passes draws you down a path that may or may not lead to where you want to go. That’s why we have to choose. Because if we don’t, then we’ve chosen who knows what or where. As followers of Jesus, there was a day or time in the past when we made a significant choice. We bowed before the Lord and told Him that we chose to follow Him and no other. But somewhere along the way, after weeks or months, or maybe years, the choice we made to go with Jesus was replaced by a casual dependence on being pulled along by Him. We stopped paying attention to where we were going, and simply rested in the fact that we were tethered to Christ, so He must be taking us where He wants us. After all, we told Him we would follow Him above all others.
Application
But when we stop choosing where we are going, the tie that binds us to Jesus gets looser and looser, stretching out so far that it might seem impossible to look and see our Savior out front. We don’t know where He’s headed, and we certainly don’t have a clue if we’re anywhere close to where He wants us. That’s why when Jesus says He is the way, the truth, and the life, it only matters to us if we’re choosing to go to the Father. If we’re going anywhere else, the way of Jesus only holds us back. Why bother to read a book with boring genealogies and confusing prophecies if we’re not going to the Father who wrote them? Why give my hard-earned money and precious time to an organization that struggles to reach those who really need reaching, if I’m not going to the Father who can reach the unreachable? Why bother with truth and humility when most others do not, if I’m not going to the Father who knows all? Today you need to choose where you are going, because everyone is going somewhere.
Charge
As we seek Him today, assess whether your goals and plans are going to take you where He is going. Ask God to help you choose His way.
